Book Description
Excerpt from One Hundred Years of Medicine and Surgery in Missouri: Historical and Biographical Review of the Careers of the Physicians and Surgeons of the State of Missouri, and Sketches of Some of Its Notable Medical Institutions In the production of this work, issued under the auspices of the St. Louis Star, the publishers claim the honor of presenting the first comprehensive history of the origin, development and progress of the medical and surgical sciences in the State of Missouri. With the united co-operation of a carefully selected staff of contributors and the painstaking efforts of the compilers, data, events and reminiscences have been collected and arranged with special regard to their chronological sequence, embracing the development of these fields of science from their earliest periods in the history of this good State and tracing them through the nineteenth century to the present day. To include in one volume the many scattered facts relating to the physicians of Missouri, biographical points of interest, landmarks of medical institutions in the early days of Missouri's development, has involved the exploration of untrodden ground. There have been no works of predecessors in this field of medical chronology to consult, and the editor and publishers realized the difficulties of their task. As a source of information we have drawn freely from the records of the State, from the pages of the early newspapers and medical periodicals, writings of illustrious physicians, now dead, and the reminiscences and recollections of some of our old and much esteemed living medical confreres. We are cognizant of the many shortcomings which this first collection of historical data of medical and surgical importance to the State of Missouri must present, and we most respectfully ask the indulgence of the reader. Whatever credit may attach to this work is due largely to the conscientious work and hearty co-operation of the selected staff of contributors, a list of whom appears on another page. The publishers extend to these gentlemen a grateful appreciation of their valued work. To the generous criticism and the appreciation of the physicians and surgeons of Missouri, and to the interested laity, we commend this work. Book Description
Today’s citizens of St. Charles will recognize the names of many early settlers and residents, such as Louis Blanchette, who founded the settlement that would later become St. Charles; St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, who helped found the first school of the Society of the Sacred Heart in America; and Lewis and Clark, who began their expedition here to explore the Louisiana Purchase territory. Later came photographer Rudolph Goebel, who chronicled St. Charles’s history for more than 50 years; Jane Crider, advocate for adults with disabilities and cofounder of Boone Center Inc.; and Archie Scott, known as “Mr. Main Street” for his years of dedication to the preservation of the historic district. Included in Legendary Locals of St. Charles are businesspeople, local personalities, authors, and entertainers, and while some of them may not yet be legendary, all of them are notable for their contributions to the St. Charles community and beyond.

Book Description
Presenting a fascinating overview of medicine in Missouri from the early days of epidemics to present-day technological advances, Quinine and Quarantine approaches the history of medicine as an integral part of the state's development. Examining the changing environmental risks and diseases that threatened Missouri over the years and the role of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers as prime routes for the spread of diseases and innovations, Loren Humphrey discusses the efforts of citizens, legislators, and health officials confronting various medical challenges. He offers intriguing medical details of the past two centuries interspersed with the stories of significant historical figures and Missourians' personal accounts. He tells of the pioneers' struggles to use natural remedies acquired from Native Americans, the gory and unsanitary attempts to treat early gunshot wounds, and the common afflictions and diseases such as "swamp fever," measles, mumps, consumption, dysentery, smallpox, and typhoid that seemed beyond medicine's effects. Humphrey also discusses the significance of the discovery and reluctant acceptance of the "antifever" breakthrough now famous as quinine, as well as the lessons learned as a result of Civil War medical techniques. Quinine and Quarantine takes readers on a remarkable journey that concludes in the present, arguably the most exciting and controversial era for medical advances. Humphrey explores new imaging techniques, laparoscopic surgery, and research on ways to overcome bacterial resistance to antibiotics. He challenges the reader to consider such compelling issues as the escalating cost of health care and the threats posed by environmental hazards. He also identifies topics over which Missourians will likely struggle well into the next century, such as transplants, managed care, abortion, and assisted suicide. Organized chronologically in fifty-year segments and written in language free of jargon, Quinine and Quarantine offers readers a broad historical view of the medical problems and solutions faced by the people of Missouri, preparing them to cope with medical issues of the new millennium.
