Book Description
The detective story, focused on inquiries, and in its wake the spy novel, built around conspiracies, developed as genres in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. During the same period, psychiatry was inventing paranoia, sociology was devising new forms of causality to explain the social lives of individuals and groups and political science was shifting the problematics of paranoia from the psychic to the social realm and seeking to explain historical events in terms of conspiracy theories. In each instance, social reality was cast into doubt. We owe the project of organizing and unifying this reality for a particular population and territory to the nation-state as it took shape at the end of the nineteenth century. Thus the figure of conspiracy became the focal point for suspicions concerning the exercise of power. Where does power really lie, and who actually holds it? The national authorities that are presumed to be responsible for it, or other agencies acting in the shadows - bankers, anarchists, secret societies, the ruling class? Questions of this kind provided the scaffolding for political ontologies that banked on a doubly distributed reality: an official but superficial reality and its opposite, a deeper, hidden, threatening reality that was unofficial but much more real. Crime fiction and spy fiction, paranoia and sociology - more or less concomitant inventions - had in common a new way of problematizing reality and of working through the contradictions inherit in it. The adventures of the conflict between these two realities - superficial versus real - provide the framework for this highly original book. Through an exploration of the work of the great masters of detective stories and spy novels - G.K. Chesterton, Arthur Conan Doyle, John Le Carré and Graham Greene among others - Boltanski shows that these works of fiction and imagination tell us something fundamental about the nature of modern societies and the modern state.

Book Description
Illuminati! Are They Really What the Stories Present Them To Be, or Are They Something Entirely Different? Keep Reading and Find Out! As far as secret societies that supposedly have complete control over the world are concerned, the Illuminati should be at the top of any conspiracy theorist's list... Who exactly are the Illuminati? What are they supposed to represent? Why the shroud of mystery? Is it possible that they are hatching some nefarious plans for the world or that they simply want to make the world a better place - if they even exist at all? The Order of the Illuminati and other secret societies have frequently been the subject of heated debates about their role in human history, particularly during the Renaissance. However, as the number of people who believe that the Illuminati secretly controls the world or that the whole thing is a hoax is increasing, more and more facts about the Illuminati have been twisted into falsehoods and myths, making it difficult to discern what is true and what is false. As a result, obtaining a truth regarding the Illuminati Order may be difficult, considering that their history is often rewritten and even changed by those in power. Furthermore, like any other secret organization, the Illuminati Order is meant to be kept hidden. Still, some things are not meant to stay hidden forever... If you are looking for the truth and accurate answers about Illuminati, you are in the right place! This book seeks to construct a more accurate image of the Illuminati Order based on verifiable evidence, much of which is written and accounted for by certain Secret Societies initiates, as it contains valuable information on the Illuminati, including the history, aims, beliefs, and several well-known conspiracy theories related to the group. Here is what this Illuminati guide for conspiracy lovers can offer you: The Illuminati's early beginnings and their religious background The Order's three grades - what is the meaning behind? The Illuminati and modern conspiracy theories - influence on the popular culture Symbolism, rituals, and occultism in the Illuminati Order The link between Illuminati and Freemasons explained The Illuminati's political agenda, strategies, and plans for the world - what is real and what is made up? And much more! If you are looking for answers that will shed light and reveal the truth about the "people who control the world from shadows," this book is perfect for you. Embark on a unique journey and discover the real face of the Illuminati. So, what are you waiting for?

Book Description
As the 21st Century marches into its third decade, our understanding of the world, and our place within it, seems to be clearer than ever. Each day brings us more and more miraculous scientific discoveries, while technology has interconnected us to an extent that our ancestors and forefathers could not have conceived. And yet, despite the collective of human knowledge lying at our fingertips, there are still a multitude of unsolved mysteries that stubbornly resist any attempts at solving them. Contained in this volume are just a few of the many, many unsolved mysteries that still haunt both skeptic and believer even in today's "modern" age. These mysteries include both classic cases from farther back in the past and a few more recent ones that have haunted the supposed golden age of the 21st Century. Among these mysteries are some of the most chilling cases of missing persons that have occurred over the past few decades. Explore the maritime nightmares within the cases of Amy Lynn Bradley and Rebecca Coriam, for whom idyllic tropical cruises turned into baffling tragedies when both women went missing at sea without a trace. Scratch your head at the seemingly impossible disappearance of Brian Schaffer, who was seen entering a crowded bar one night but never seen leaving. Follow the leads in the sinister vanishings of Jodie Huisentruit, Ben Needham, and Renata Antczak, whose disappearances hint at darker crimes, obsessions, and coverups. You can then place yourself in the shoes of a grizzled detective as you follow along with the criminal investigations of some of the most disturbing and gruesome unsolved crimes of the 20th Century. Profile a rogue's gallery of potential suspects in the horrific murder and mutilation of the young and beautiful Elizabeth Short-aka "The Black Dahlia." Join famed lawman Elliot Ness as he pursues the darkest and most difficult case of his storied career-the faceless psychopath known by the grisly moniker "the Cleveland Torso Murderer." Walk through the snowy ground of an isolated Bavarian farmstead as you explore the terrifying mass killing of an entire family during the infamous Hinterkaifeck killings. Then, turn your attention to the skies as we examine some of the most notorious and intriguing UFO sightings to have occurred in the 21st Century. Sightings that have spanned both the isolated American southwest and the heavily-populated areas around New York City and Chicago. And finally, explore the truth behind some of the most authentic UFO footage to come out in decades, the sightings that baffled the mighty United States Navy and forced the American military to, for the first time, officially acknowledge the existence of UFOs. Among these disappearances, unsolved crimes, strange phenomena, and even lingering historical mysteries, you can read all details and theories and decide for yourself what you want to believe. Or not believe. These cases-and more-will astound, intrigue, and unsettle you and, more than anything else, leave you with a lasting impression that there might be more to our world than first meets the eye.
