This work re-examines the evidence from open-air sites in northwestern Greece, an area where these sites show a dense and patterned distribution. It shows that open-air sites have the potential to offer a broader picture of industrial variability and regional adaptations than does the study of isolated rockshelters. The technological analysis of the lithic collections from surface finds reveals geographical patterns of variability in the application of primary flaking techniques. It is proposed that this technological variability reflects temporal modifications in Middle Palaeolithic settlement patterns, themselves triggered by oscillations in climate and sea levels. At a methodological level, this study shows the use that can be made of typological-technological analyses of low time resolution lithic assemblages, thus contributing to the development of fieldwork strategies and analytical methodologies appropriate for research in Palaeolithic open-air sites. These sites remain under-investigated in Europe, resulting in distortions in our knowledge of the European Palaeolithic.

It is based on an international conference held in Athens, Greece in January 2020. The eastern Ionian occupies a geographically complex area, which since the Pleistocene has undergone significant alterations due to tectonic activity and sea-level fluctuations. This dynamic environment, where islands, mainland, and sea intertwined to present different landscapes and seascapes to the human communities exploring the region at different times in the past, provides an ideal setting for their study from a diachronic perspective. This book deals thematically with the processes of circulation of people, materials, artefacts and ideas by examining patterns of settlement, burial and multi-layered interconnections between the different communities via land and sea. It investigates aspects of regional and interregional communication, isolation, collective memory and the creation of distinct identities within and between different cultural and social groups. It focuses on the islands of the Central Ionian Sea, offering new data from excavations and surveys on Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Ithaki and the smaller islands of the Inner Ionian Archipelago between Lefkada and Akarnania. In 1999 a collection of documents were found in the archives of the Italian Institute of Human Palaeontology belonging to Luigi Cardini, one of the founders of the Institute. These documents included site notebooks, photographs, drawings and maps relating to work carried out in Albania from 1930-39 where he was sent on a governmental mission to 'reinforce Italian supremacy in Albania through archaeological research'. This monograph publishes extracts from these notebooks within a historical, political and archaeological context. The work he carried out is synthesised and a report is included on survey work carried out in 2000 and 2001 to attempt to relocate many of Cardini's cave sites described in his notebooks.
