Book Description
Reactive systems are computing systems which are interactive, such as real-time systems, operating systems, concurrent systems, control systems, etc. They are among the most difficult computing systems to program. Temporal logic is a formal tool/language which yields excellent results in specifying reactive systems. This volume, the first of two, subtitled Specification, has a self-contained introduction to temporal logic and, more important, an introduction to the computational model for reactive programs, developed by Zohar Manna and Amir Pnueli of Stanford University and the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel, respectively.

Book Description
Alan Robinson This set of essays pays tribute to Bob Kowalski on his 60th birthday, an anniversary which gives his friends and colleagues an excuse to celebrate his career as an original thinker, a charismatic communicator, and a forceful intellectual leader. The logic programming community hereby and herein conveys its respect and thanks to him for his pivotal role in creating and fostering the conceptual paradigm which is its raison d’Œtre. The diversity of interests covered here reflects the variety of Bob’s concerns. Read on. It is an intellectual feast. Before you begin, permit me to send him a brief personal, but public, message: Bob, how right you were, and how wrong I was. I should explain. When Bob arrived in Edinburgh in 1967 resolution was as yet fairly new, having taken several years to become at all widely known. Research groups to investigate various aspects of resolution sprang up at several institutions, the one organized by Bernard Meltzer at Edinburgh University being among the first. For the half-dozen years that Bob was a leading member of Bernard’s group, I was a frequent visitor to it, and I saw a lot of him. We had many discussions about logic, computation, and language.

Book Description
In the recent decades mathematical logic has become more and more important in computer science and, in general, in system engineering. In fact, by definition, it is the wey of expressing our reasoning in terms of mathematical formalism, thus supplying it with the typical rigor and precision of mathematics. Not by chance, automatic information processing is now pervasive and we find it practically in any human activity and artefact, from embedded, safety-critical systems, to e-commerce, to social networks, etc. Such a pervasiveness and the consequent heterogeneity of the involved systems mandate much more generality in the formalism supporting the engineering activity than traditional specialized models such as, e.g., those for electric circuits and mechanical engines: mathematical logic, paired with computer applications, provides such generality.

Book Description
What Is Description Logic A family of formal knowledge representation languages known as description logics (DL) has been developed. A good number of DLs have a higher level of expressiveness than propositional logic but a lower level than first-order logic. On the other hand, the key reasoning issues for DLs are (typically) decidable, and efficient decision processes have been proposed and implemented for these problems. In contrast, the latter difficulties cannot be solved by reasoning at all. There is a general description logic, as well as a spatial description logic, a temporal description logic, a spatiotemporal description logic, and a fuzzy description logic. Each description logic strikes a unique balance between the expressive capability and the reasoning complexity that it offers by supporting a unique collection of mathematical constructors. How You Will Benefit (I) Insights, and validations about the following topics: Chapter 1: Description Logic Chapter 2: Knowledge Representation and Reasoning Chapter 3: Semantic Web Chapter 4: Ontology Inference Layer Chapter 5: Web Ontology Language Chapter 6: Semantic Technology Chapter 7: Expressive Power (Computer Science) Chapter 8: F-Logic Chapter 9: Semantic Web Rule Language Chapter 10: Ontology Engineering (II) Answering the public top questions about description logic. (III) Real world examples for the usage of description logic in many fields. (IV) 17 appendices to explain, briefly, 266 emerging technologies in each industry to have 360-degree full understanding of description logic' technologies. Who This Book Is For Professionals, undergraduate and graduate students, enthusiasts, hobbyists, and those who want to go beyond basic knowledge or information for any kind of description logic.

Book Description
This volume contains papers presented at the BCS-FACS Workshop on Specification and Verification of Concurrent Systems held on 6-8 July 1988, at the University of Stirling, Scotland. Specification and verification techniques are playing an increasingly important role in the design and production of practical concurrent systems. The wider application of these techniques serves to identify difficult problems that require new approaches to their solution and further developments in specification and verification. The Workshop aimed to capture this interplay by providing a forum for the exchange of the experience of academic and industrial experts in the field. Presentations included: surveys, original research, practical experi ence with methods, tools and environments in the following or related areas: Object-oriented, process, data and logic based models and specifi cation methods for concurrent systems Verification of concurrent systems Tools and environments for the analysis of concurrent systems Applications of specification languages to practical concurrent system design and development. We should like to thank the invited speakers and all the authors of the papers whose work contributed to making the Workshop such a success. We were particularly pleased with the international response to our call for papers. Invited Speakers Pierre America Philips Research Laboratories University of Warwick Professor M. Formal Description Techniques and Protocol Specification, Testing and Verification addresses formal description techniques (FDTs) applicable to distributed systems and communication protocols. It aims to present the state of the art in theory, application, tools and industrialization of FDTs. Among the important features presented are: FDT-based system and protocol engineering; FDT-application to distributed systems; Protocol engineering; Practical experience and case studies. Formal Description Techniques and Protocol Specification, Testing and Verification comprises the proceedings of the Joint International Conference on Formal Description Techniques for Distributed Systems and Communication Protocols and Protocol Specification, Testing and Verification, sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing, held in November 1998, Paris, France. Formal Description Techniques and Protocol Specification, Testing and Verification is suitable as a secondary text for a graduate-level course on Distributed Systems or Communications, and as a reference for researchers and practitioners in industry.

Book Description
The 1999 Annual Conference of the European Association for Computer Science Logic, CSL’99, was held in Madrid, Spain, on September 20-25, 1999. CSL’99 was the 13th in a series of annual meetings, originally intended as Internat- nal Workshops on Computer Science Logic, and the 8th to be held as the - nual Conference of the EACSL. The conference was organized by the Computer Science Departments (DSIP and DACYA) at Universidad Complutense in M- rid (UCM). The CSL’99 program committee selected 34 of 91 submitted papers for p- sentation at the conference and publication in this proceedings volume. Each submitted paper was refereed by at least two, and in almost all cases, three di erent referees. The second refereeing round, previously required before a - per was accepted for publication in the proceedings, was dropped following a decision taken by the EACSL membership meeting held during CSL’98 (Brno, Czech Republic, August 25, 1998).
