There are mutual suspicions: the Chinese fear of a Japanese military revival and the Japanese concern over increasing Chinese economic competition and territorial ambitions. Robert Taylor recognises the mistrust in Sino-Japanese relations, but also sees shared advantages in this traditionally adversarial relationship. The Chinese are currently modelling their economic strategy on Japan's developmental experience, even though China's policies and institutions have distinctive features and differing agendas. Triangular relations which frame China and Japan as two sides of an isosceles triangle usually focus on the United States as the significant third side. This edited book examines another relatively underexplored set of triangular relationsâ "those between China, Japan and Southeast Asia. The region, comprised of eleven small and medium-size states, is often considered inconsequential in the tempestuous world of international politics where political clout, economic prowess, military strength and soft power matter most. Often seen as easily dominated by extra-regional great powers, this volume reconsiders the regionâ (TM)s relationship with China and Japan, their two Asian neighbours to the northeast which also happen to be the worldâ (TM)s second and third largest economies. While China and Japan do compete for turf in Southeast Asia, states in the region do not perceive themselves as strategic pawns of these two great Asian powers but instead as proactively engaging China and Japan in the region. The country-specific case studies of this book collectively support the thesis that the Southeast Asian states actively seek to manoeuvre between China and Japan for their own advantage and at the same time grapple with developments in Northeast Asia through regional integration efforts. Through the establishment of benchmark norms and values, Southeast Asia attempts to socialise China and Japan and other external powers to the ASEAN way. This edited volume examines mobile phone use in China. Unlike most studies on ICT development in China this book argues for the importance of the cultural realm as captured in mobile phone usage in reflecting the normative basis and struggle of the people. It stresses how the mobile phone is in fact an important means by which one can understand a rapidly changing China. A key concern of the book is to assert the uniqueness of China’s experience in mobile phone usage. This uniqueness is encapsulated by the phrase ‘riding the double juggernaut’, in that Chinese society is exposed to a rapid process of industrialization and cyberization in a short period of time. The contributors maintain that such density of experience under a compressed period when the society has a thick cultural heritage of its own and yet is still under a dictating rule all come together to provide a unique situation in China. .
