Book Description
This thesis gives a thorough account of the development of iron-catalysed hydrosilylation, hydroboration and hydromagnesiation reactions. With extraordinary referencing and scientific argument, Mark Greenhalgh describes the development of methodologies which require only commercially available materials and non-specialised techniques. The intention of this approach is to ensure the science can be adopted widely by the chemical community. In addition to an insight into the processes involved in methodology development, Greenhalgh discusses and determines the relevant reaction mechanisms. This thesis provides not only the most thorough review of the area, but offers a level of insight well beyond that expected from a Ph.D. student. The work in this thesis has been published at the highest level, and the results and ideas have led to 3 industry-funded Ph.D. studentships and grant income in excess of £1 million.

Book Description
Chemistry and Material Sciences naturally depend greatly on Synthesis as the initial stage for the existence of compounds and materials with desired behaviors, within the overall streamline of Design/Synthesis — Properties — Application/Function, and their relations. Such a general approach is of a too wide scope to be properly treated in a single set of publications, but this one on 'Synthesis and Applications in Chemistry and Materials' restricts itself by aiming to show the strength and international character of the current research in synthetic chemistry that is being developed in Portugal or abroad by teams that cooperate with this country. Hence, it gathers representative contributions of main Portuguese research groups and foreign collaborating ones. Nevertheless, the topic should be understood in a wide sense, being open to types of studies with significance on sustainable synthesis and applications in chemistry, materials and/or related sciences.

Book Description
As 2019 has been declared the International Year of the Periodic Table, it is appropriate that Structure and Bonding marks this anniversary with two special volumes. In 1869 Dmitri Ivanovitch Mendeleev first proposed his periodic table of the elements. He is given the major credit for proposing the conceptual framework used by chemists to systematically inter-relate the chemical properties of the elements. However, the concept of periodicity evolved in distinct stages and was the culmination of work by other chemists over several decades. For example, Newland’s Law of Octaves marked an important step in the evolution of the periodic system since it represented the first clear statement that the properties of the elements repeated after intervals of 8. Mendeleev’s predictions demonstrated in an impressive manner how the periodic table could be used to predict the occurrence and properties of new elements. Not all of his many predictions proved to be valid, but the discovery of scandium, gallium and germanium represented sufficient vindication of its utility and they cemented its enduring influence. Mendeleev’s periodic table was based on the atomic weights of the elements and it was another 50 years before Moseley established that it was the atomic number of the elements, that was the fundamental parameter and this led to the prediction of further elements. Some have suggested that the periodic table is one of the most fruitful ideas in modern science and that it is comparable to Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection, proposed at approximately the same time. There is no doubt that the periodic table occupies a central position in chemistry. In its modern form it is reproduced in most undergraduate inorganic textbooks and is present in almost every chemistry lecture room and classroom. This second volume provides chemists with an overview of the important role played by the Periodic Table in advancing our knowledge of solid state and bioinorganic chemistry. It also illustrates how it has been used to fine-tune the properties of compounds which have found commercial applications in catalysis, electronics, ceramics and in medicinal chemistry.

Book Description
Organosilicon Compounds: Experiment (Physico-Chemical Studies) and Applications, volume 2, also contains two parts. In its first part, Experiment (Physico-Chemical Studies), the application of modern instrumental tools (such as X-ray crystallography, 29Si NMR spectroscopy, UV-Photoelectron Spectroscopy, and other methods) for assessing the structures of organosilicon compounds is described. The second part, Applications, reviews the current research in the field of material science, specifically the use of organosilicon compounds in synthetic chemistry directed towards the creation of new materials. Organosilicon Compounds: From Theory to Synthesis to Applications provides a comprehensive overview of this important area of organic and organometallic chemistry, dealing with compounds containing carbon–silicon bonds. This field, which includes compounds that are widely encountered in commercial products such as in the fabrication of sealants, adhesives, and coatings, has seen many milestone discoveries reported during the last two decades. Beginning with the theoretical aspects of organosilicon compounds’ structure and bonding, the book then explores their synthetic aspects, including main group element organosilicon compounds, transition metal complexes, silicon cages and clusters, low-coordinate organosilicon derivatives (cations, radicals, anions, multiple bonds to silicon, silaaromatics), and more. Next, readers will find valuable sections that explore physical and chemical properties of organosilicon compounds by means of X-ray crystallography, 29Si NMR spectroscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy, and other methods. Finally, the work delves into applications for industrial uses and in many related fields, such as polymers, material science, nanotechnology, bioorganics, and medicinal silicon chemistry. Features valuable contributions from prominent experts cover both fundamental (theoretical, synthetic, physico-chemical) and applied (material science, applications) aspects of modern organosilicon chemistry Covers important breakthroughs in the field as well as with the historically significant achievements of the past Includes applied information for a wide range of specialists from junior and senior researchers (from both academia and industry), working in organometallic, organosilicon, main group element, transition metal, and industrial silicon chemistry, as well as those from interdisciplinary fields such as polymer, material science, nanotechnology
