Book Description
Excerpt from In the Footprints of Dante: A Treasury of Verse and Prose From the Works of Dante A special feature of the book is the inclusion of a large number of extracts from the Convivio (Dante's "Banquet"), a work full of beautiful thoughts, which is practically unknown to the English reader, and is by no means so familiar as it should be even to many professed students of Dante. The extracts throughout are given in the original as well as in English, for to no author more forcibly than to Dante himself - especially as regards the Divina Commedia - do Dante's own words apply as to the inadequacy of a translation to preserve the charm and music of the original. This book, therefore, is designed to appeal as well to those who can read and appreciate the original as to those who have little or no knowledge of Italian, and consequently require the services of an interpreter. In the Inferno and Paradiso I have availed myself almost exclusively of the well-known versions of Gary and Wright, whose initials are appended to their respective contributions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in our edition. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.
