Book Description
The Magnificent Century is a history book which covers the long reign of the weathercock King Henry III, from 1216 to 1272. It was during the period covered in this book, an age appropriately thermed "the magnificent century," that England first made remarkable strides toward freedom, establishing principles of democratic rule which would later be accepted by the world. Englishmen returned home from the Crusades with the first implements for a new life—foreign books, medicines, and maps of the East; new foods, new heresies, and even new diseases. Although wars went on as before and ignorance still held sway, this was the beginning of an awakening which was to sweep men on to spectacular advances in the arts, science, philosophy, and theology.

It was an era of brilliant successes, tragic reverses and wild extravagance.

Book Description
Hilaire Belloc lived a remarkably accomplished life, serving as President of the Oxford Union and as a Member of the British Parliament. The author of over 150 works, Belloc wrote numerous essays, travelogues, and volumes on history, politics, and economics. Among the best-known of his non-fiction works is "The Servile State". First published in 1912, this work is an economic history of Europe, starting in ancient times, through the middle ages, to the industrial revolution, and finally culminating in an assessment of the state of the European economy in the first part of the 20th century. Belloc begins his thesis with an examination of the impact of slavery in ancient times, serfdom in the Middle Ages, and posits his theories on how European society transitioned to its current state of capitalism. Largely a polemic against the social reforms of the early 20th century, Belloc argues that state regulation will ultimately give rise to a new type of slavery by an authoritarian state. While his predictions regarding the results of state regulation over the excesses of capitalism have proved to be radically hyperbolic, "The Servile State" remains an insightful discussion of the state of political economics in the early part of the 20th century. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

Book Description
"The present essay should be sufficient in itself to silence all such criticism on the first count. Herein it is at once obvious and striking just how practical the Distributist Vision was; practical not in the sense of easy, but practical in the sense of being articulated with a view toward application and implementation. For in the Restoration of Property, Belloc's concern is not so much with explaining what a Distributist society is, but with sketching, even if in neccessarily brief and vague terms, what that society looks like, how it might be achieved, and how it should be preserved."--Jacket.
