Book Description
The Handbook of Digital Image Synthesis constitutes a comprehensive reference guide in the rapidly-developing field of computer graphics, whose applications span not only the movie and gaming industries, but also digital marketing, industrial and architectural design, virtual-environment simulators, and medical imaging. This resource provides an extensive, yet concise, treatment of the elementary principles and advanced concepts underpinning digital image synthesis, while covering a broad range of scientific topics such as pure and applied mathematics, geometric surfaces and data structures, the physics of light interaction and propagation, analytical and numerical simulation schemes, and optical perception and imaging. With its foundations laid from the ground up, the content includes a compilation of the theoretical formulas relevant for practical implementation in an actual rendering system, along with their step-by-step derivation, which provides field practitioners with a thorough understanding of their underlying assumptions and limitations, as well as with the methodologies necessary to adapt the results to new problems. Throughout, the presentation of the material is substantiated by numerous figures and computer-generated images illustrating the core ideas, several tables synthesizing results and industry standards, and platform-independent pseudo-code highlighting the core algorithms, in addition to a large collection of bibliographic references to the literature and an index of the standard scientific terms defined therein, thereby allowing the reader to rapidly harness fundamental notions and experimental trends.

Book Description
Image synthesis, or rendering, is a field of transformation: it changes geometry and physics into meaningful images. Because the most popular algorithms frequently change, it is increasingly important for researchers and implementors to have a basic understanding of the principles of image synthesis. Focusing on theory, Andrew Glassner provides a comprehensive explanation of the three core fields of study that come together to form digital image synthesis: the human visual system, digital signal processing, and the interaction of matter and light. Assuming no more than a basic background in calculus, Glassner transforms his passion and expertise into a thorough presentation of each of these disciplines, and their elegant orchestration into modern rendering techniques such as radiosity and ray tracing.

Book Description
Image Synthesis: Theory and Practice is the first book completely dedicated to the numerous techniques of image synthesis. Both theoretical and practical aspects are treated in detail. Numerous impressive computer-generated images are used to explain the most advanced techniques in image synthesis. The book contains a detailed description of the most fundamental algorithms; other less important algorithms are summarized or simply listed. This volume is also a unique handbook of mathematical formulae for image synthesis. The four first chapters of the book survey the basic techniques of computer graphics which play an important role in the design of an image: geometric models, image and viewing transformations, curves and surfaces and solid modeling techniques. In the next chapters, each major topic in image synthesis is presented. The first important problem is the detection and processing of visible surfaces, then two chapters are dedicated to the central problem of light and illumination. As aliasing is a major problem in image rendering, the fundamental antialiasing and motion blur techniques are explained. The most common shadow algorithms are then presented as well as techniques for producing soft shadows and penumbrae. In the last few years, image rendering has been strongly influenced by ray tracing techniques. For this reason, two chapters are dedicated to this important approach. Then a chapter is completely dedicated to fractals from the formal Mandelbrot theory to the recursive subdivision approaches. Natural phenomena present a particularly difficult challenge in image synthesis. For this reason, a large portion of the book is devoted to latest methods to simulate these phenomena: particle systems, scalar fields, volume density scattering models. Various techniques are also described for representing terrains, mountains, water, waves, sky, clouds, fog, fire, trees, and grass. Several techniques for combining images are also explained: adaptive rendering, montage and composite methods. The last chapter presents in detail the MIRALab image synthesis software.

Book Description
Digital image processing has experienced explosive growth over the past two decades. Public awareness has increased by way of video games, digital video special effects used in the entertainment industry, as well as articles in the mainstream press. However, the most significant impact of digital image processing in the 90s will be in the area of applications to real-world problems. To help readers keep pace, author Kenneth R. Castleman concentrates on those techniques that have proven most useful in practice. Part I presents several important concepts that can be developed without detailed mathematical analysis for a basic understanding. Part II addresses techniques that rely more on mathematics and elaborates analytically on certain concepts introduced in Part I. Part III covers specific application areas that are particularly important in industry, science, and medicine.
