Time Out Chicago, Top 10 Book of 2005 Winner of the 2006 PEN USA Literary Award for Fiction Training horses is dangerous—a head-to-head confrontation with 1,000 pounds of muscle and little sense takes courage, but more important, patience and smarts. It is these same qualities that allow John and his uncle Gus to live in the beautiful high desert of Wyoming. A black horse trainer is a curiosity, at the very least, but a familiar curiosity in these parts. It is the brutal murder of a young gay man, however, that pushes this small community to the teetering edge of intolerance. Highly praised for his storytelling and ability to address the toughest issues of our time with humor, grace, and originality, Wounded by Percival Everett offers a brilliant novel that explores the alarming consequences of hatred in a divided America.

The devotional was mined from a heart that has experienced years of suffering that comes from providing direct care to innumerable individuals from all walks of life. He refers to this care as, "prolonged psychological CPR." Book Description
'I believe there are many of us who have been wounded by God's people. And I believe there are those of you who have been so wounded, that you have confused God's people with God, and so have run from Him. The purpose of this book is to help you get past your wounds...to move forward into the joy and fellowship of God's presence, claiming the fullness of the blessings He has for you. God loves the wounded. I know.' In her most personal book to date, much loved author Anne Graham Lotz looks at a deeply painful question: what to do when we suffer rejection and hardship at the hands of other believers. Drawing on the story of Hagar, Abraham's mistreated servant, Anne shares the good news of healing and hope, offered by a God who loves us all - especially those on the periphery. An inspiring blend of Old Testament narrative with the author's own experience, this is a book that will show you that, just like Hagar found, 'you can't outrun God'.

Book Description
A radically fresh interpretation of how we can best serve others from the bestselling author of The Return of the Prodigal Son, hailed as “one of the world’s greatest spiritual writers” by Christianity Today “In our own woundedness, we can become a source of life for others.” In this hope-filled and profoundly simple book, Henri Nouwen inspires devoted men and women who want to be of service in their church or community but who have found traditional outreach alienating and ineffective. Weaving keen cultural analysis with his psychological and religious insights, Nouwen presents a balanced and creative theology of service that begins with the realization of fundamental woundedness in human nature. According to Nouwen, ministers are called to identify the suffering in their own hearts and make that recognition the starting point of their service. Ministers must be willing to go beyond their professional, somewhat aloof roles and leave themselves open as fellow human beings with the same wounds and suffering as those they serve. In other words, we heal from our wounds. The Wounded Healer is a thoughtful and insightful guide that will be welcomed by anyone engaged in the service of others.

Book Description
This substantive collection of essays by Serene Jones explores recent works in the field of trauma studies. Central to its overall theme is an investigation of the myriad ways both individual and collective violence affect one's capacity to remember, to act, and to love; how violence can challenge theological understandings of grace; and even how the traumatic experience of Jesus' death is remembered. Of particular interest is Jones's focus on the long-term effects of collective violence on abuse survivors, war veterans, and marginalized populations, and the discrete ways in which grace and redemption might be exhibited in each context. At the heart of each essay are two deeply interrelated faith-claims that are central to Jones's understanding of Christian theology: first, we live in a world profoundly broken by violence; second, God loves this world and desires that suffering be met by words of hope, of love, and of grace. This truly cutting-edge book is the first trauma study to directly take into account theological issues.

Book Description
Church should be a safe place, right? Then why do so many get hurt there? Ray Beeson and Chris Hayward combine their years of ministry experience to address head-on the elephant in the room: church members and church leaders hurt Christians. All the time. And the long-lasting effects—rejection, shame, despair, loneliness, fear—can be devastating. The authors have witnessed the rise of the “dones,” those who are just done with God thanks to scars from church. With first-person stories of hurt and loss, this book is a wake-up call for any who deny woundedness in the church but is also a redemptive message for any who hurt from church wounds. Leaders and laypeople alike will learn how to grieve over abuse, to leave unhealthy attitudes and patterns that cause pain, and to trust in God’s real, delivering work through churches that build up, not tear down. Thanks to the grace of God, there is always hope beyond the pain.

Book Description
Grace. Such an amazing word. "Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me." The impact of those words never really touched my heart until about five years ago when I gave my life to Christ and I realized the amazing meaning behind the word GRACE. You see, I grew up as a statistic just like a lot of poor teenage girls did, and still do. Until five years ago at the age of 39 when God got a hold of my life, I had lived a life of constant failure. I couldn't escape my past. It wouldn't go away no matter how hard I tried to ignore it or get away from it. I kept reliving the same mistakes and failures over and over again. That was the problem, in all actuality. Until I was ready to stand up and face my past and work through the pain I lived through, I would continue to live in a cycle of failure. I grew up on welfare and lived 'across the tracks' for most of my teenage years. My parents divorced and my father walked away. That wasn't such a bad thing though because he was never really a dad to us even when he was actually in the home. It was freeing for me when he left. I went wild and started my teenage life of rebellion. I had my first son at the age of 16. Four years later, I was pregnant with twins and lost them both at different stages of my pregnancy. I was promiscuous with sex throughout my life due to my father struggling with sexual sins and introducing them to me. I have been married and divorced multiple times. I was diagnosed stage III cervical cancer at the age of 22. Due to all the emotional pain I held inside throughout my life, I eventually started using drugs to find happiness. Surprised, aren't you? I became a hopeless drug addict who was just trying to kill the pain I was living with inside of me from years of stuffed hurt. I was just looking for an unconditional love to fill my heart. Then one day, I had a life changing encounter with God. I had an experience so powerful that my life has been forever changed. He is continually changing me and growing up in Him! Until that day when I met Christ, I was just a girl who had traveled down many destructive roads due to my rebellion, anger, and obsessive need to feel loved and accepted. Believing that I would never be able to be loved...I felt I would always be doomed to live a life of misery and hopelessness. However, I am no longer that girl and I am no longer ashamed of where I've been. I have finally come to know and accept God's wonderful grace, compassion, mercy, and forgiveness in my life. He has shown me how he has protected me and saved me numerous times...even in the midst of all my rebellion. I'm hoping God's story of my life will touch your heart and reveal to you that there is NO sin that he cannot forgive, NO emotional wound that he cannot heal, NO life he cannot redeem for his good if you just seek him. Will you ask him to help you and allow him to work in your life? God pursues you. He loves you. God has a purpose for your life. God also has a purpose for my life...I just didn't know it yet.

Book Description
Imploding relationships, incapacitating losses, injurious personal mistakes, or spiritual failures—whatever the issue, the wounds are the same. Whether it’s a lapse in judgment by Bathsheba or the moral failure of the women’s ministry leader in your local church; the spiritual insensitivity of Martha or the compulsive obsessions of your church’s care circle chairwoman; the terror of an abandoned single mother like Hagar or the struggling single mother in your prayer group—the time and circumstances are different, but the wounds are equally deep and spiritually devastating. Dena Dyer and Tina Samples get it. They have their own stories of pain before healing—along with similar experiences of their families and friends. Offering more than pat affirmations or vicarious shoulders to cry on, Dena and Tina delve deep into the shared emotions and injuries that women of all ages have in common—and move readers toward the recovery and healing that only God can provide. No matter what hurts you’ve experienced, Wounded Women of the Bible proves that God understands and that healing is not only His intention but His delight! This is a book not to be missed!
