We know all about drug abuse and alcohol abuse, but you may also be addicted to tea and caffeine. It started out as an amusement or to keep yourself awake when you had to work hard at night, or just as a social recreation in keeping up with your friends. This is how you may have started smoking. Your friends were doing it, so you bent under peer pressure and soon you were smoking like a chimney. This is also how drug addiction starts with "I dare you," told to you by someone who you admire, particularly, and who you think plenty cool. You better not being hanging out with your smoking friends; you have been doing so well at quitting. There are many people out there, especially doctors, who are going to tell you that addictions of any sort do not go away until and unless you put yourself in the hands of the medical tribe. They are also going to ask you to join Alcoholics Anonymous, where you are going to be put on more drugs so that you can bear the withdrawal symptoms of detoxifying yourself from a drug, alcohol, opium, cannabis, marijuana, or other addiction. Let me tell you, that for centuries, there have been many natural alternative medicines in which people have been getting cured of such addictions, but of course modern-day doctors do not want you to know anything about these therapies. Instead, they would rather have you go through the hassle of withdrawal - all the while, giving you the same drug in smaller quantities so that your body supposedly gets used to that smaller dosage - and you think that you are getting better.Well, my friends, that isn't necessarily so. Soon you may find yourself craving your recreational drug of choice, breakfast Martini, snort, snifter, whatever you call it, and there you are back again on the drug cartels' statistics list.

Book Description
Some people suffer from chronic, debilitating disorders for which no conventional treatment brings relief. Can marijuana ease their symptoms? Would it be breaking the law to turn to marijuana as a medication? There are few sources of objective, scientifically sound advice for people in this situation. Most books about marijuana and medicine attempt to promote the views of advocates or opponents. To fill the gap between these extremes, authors Alison Mack and Janet Joy have extracted critical findings from a recent Institute of Medicine study on this important issue, interpreting them for a general audience. Marijuana As Medicine? provides patientsâ€"as well as the people who care for themâ€"with a foundation for making decisions about their own health care. This empowering volume examines several key points, including: Whether marijuana can relieve a variety of symptoms, including pain, muscle spasticity, nausea, and appetite loss. The dangers of smoking marijuana, as well as the effects of its active chemical components on the immune system and on psychological health. The potential use of marijuana-based medications on symptoms of AIDS, cancer, multiple sclerosis, and several other specific disorders, in comparison with existing treatments. Marijuana As Medicine? introduces readers to the active compounds in marijuana. These include the principal ingredient in Marinol, a legal medication. The authors also discuss the prospects for developing other drugs derived from marijuana's active ingredients. In addition to providing an up-to-date review of the science behind the medical marijuana debate, Mack and Joy also answer common questions about the legal status of marijuana, explaining the conflict between state and federal law regarding its medical use. Intended primarily as an aid to patients and caregivers, this book objectively presents critical information so that it can be used to make responsible health care decisions. Marijuana As Medicine? will also be a valuable resource for policymakers, health care providers, patient counselors, medical faculty and studentsâ€"in short, anyone who wants to learn more about this important issue.

Book Description
The brain is the most complex organ in our body. Indeed, it is perhaps the most complex structure we have ever encountered in nature. Both structurally and functionally, there are many peculiarities that differentiate the brain from all other organs. The brain is our connection to the world around us and by governing nervous system and higher function, any disturbance induces severe neurological and psychiatric disorders that can have a devastating effect on quality of life. Our understanding of the physiology and biochemistry of the brain has improved dramatically in the last two decades. In particular, the critical role of cations, including magnesium, has become evident, even if incompletely understood at a mechanistic level. The exact role and regulation of magnesium, in particular, remains elusive, largely because intracellular levels are so difficult to routinely quantify. Nonetheless, the importance of magnesium to normal central nervous system activity is self-evident given the complicated homeostatic mechanisms that maintain the concentration of this cation within strict limits essential for normal physiology and metabolism. There is also considerable accumulating evidence to suggest alterations to some brain functions in both normal and pathological conditions may be linked to alterations in local magnesium concentration. This book, containing chapters written by some of the foremost experts in the field of magnesium research, brings together the latest in experimental and clinical magnesium research as it relates to the central nervous system. It offers a complete and updated view of magnesiums involvement in central nervous system function and in so doing, brings together two main pillars of contemporary neuroscience research, namely providing an explanation for the molecular mechanisms involved in brain function, and emphasizing the connections between the molecular changes and behavior. It is the untiring efforts of those magnesium researchers who have dedicated their lives to unraveling the mysteries of magnesiums role in biological systems that has inspired the collation of this volume of work.

Book Description
The medical use of marijuana is surrounded by a cloud of social, political, and religious controversy, which obscures the facts that should be considered in the debate. This book summarizes what we know about marijuana from evidence-based medicineâ€"the harm it may do and the relief it may bring to patients. The book helps the reader understand not only what science has to say about medical marijuana but also the logic behind the scientific conclusions. Marijuana and Medicine addresses the science base and the therapeutic effects of marijuana use for medical conditions such as glaucoma and multiple sclerosis. It covers marijuana's mechanism of action, acute and chronic effects on health and behavior, potential adverse effects, efficacy of different delivery systems, analysis of the data about marijuana as a gateway drug, and the prospects for developing cannabinoid drugs. The book evaluates how well marijuana meets accepted standards for medicine and considers the conclusions of other blue-ribbon panels. Full of useful facts, this volume will be important to anyone interested in informed debate about the medical use of marijuana: advocates and opponents as well as policymakers, regulators, and health care providers.

Book Description
The Pharmacological and Epidemiological Aspects of Adolescent Drug Dependence is a collection of proceedings presented at the International Symposium on the Pharmacological and Epidemiological Aspects of Adolescent Drug Dependence, held in London on September 1-2, 1966 under the auspices of the Society for the Study of Addiction to Alcohol and Other Drugs. The symposium provided a forum for discussing the pharmacological and epidemiological aspects of drug dependence in adolescents. Comprised of 10 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the chemistry and pharmacology of narcotic drugs in adolescence, as well as narcotic addiction in young people in the United States. The discussion then turns to pharmacology and clinical observations on stimulant drugs and hallucinogenic drugs; the epidemiology and social pharmacology of drugs of dependence; and features of adolescent drug dependence. Regulations aimed at controlling drugs of dependence are also analyzed in relation to the national incidence of adolescent dependence in certain countries such as Britain, Belgium, Israel, and the Netherlands. The remaining chapters focus on the language, evidence, and patterns of drug abuse, together with research in relation to drugs of dependence. This book will be of interest to pharmacologists, epidemiologists, and policymakers concerned with drug dependence.

Book Description
All across the United States, individuals, families, communities, and health care systems are struggling to cope with substance use, misuse, and substance use disorders. Substance misuse and substance use disorders have devastating effects, disrupt the future plans of too many young people, and all too often, end lives prematurely and tragically. Substance misuse is a major public health challenge and a priority for our nation to address. The effects of substance use are cumulative and costly for our society, placing burdens on workplaces, the health care system, families, states, and communities. The Report discusses opportunities to bring substance use disorder treatment and mainstream health care systems into alignment so that they can address a person's overall health, rather than a substance misuse or a physical health condition alone or in isolation. It also provides suggestions and recommendations for action that everyone-individuals, families, community leaders, law enforcement, health care professionals, policymakers, and researchers-can take to prevent substance misuse and reduce its consequences.

Book Description
The Report continues to provide in depth trend analysis of the four main drug markets in its first section. In addition, to mark the one hundred year anniversary of the Shanghai Opium Commission, and one hundred years of international drug control, the Report contains an in-depth look at the development of the international drug control system. The Report also contains a small statistical annex which provides a detailed look at production, prices and consumption. As in previous years, the present Report is based on data obtained primarily from the annual reports questionnaire (ARQ) sent by Governments to UNODC in 2007, supplemented by other sources when necessary and where available. Two of the main limitations herein are: (i) that ARQ reporting is not systematic enough, both in terms of number of countries responding and of content, and (ii) that most countries lack the adequate monitoring systems required to produce reliable, comprehensive and internationally comparable data. National monitoring systems are, however, improving and UNODC has contributed to this process.
