Recent years have witnessed a growth of interest in the special functions called ridge functions. These functions appear in various fields and under various guises. They appear in partial differential equations (where they are called plane waves), in computerized tomography, and in statistics. Ridge functions are also the underpinnings of many central models in neural network theory. In this book various approximation theoretic properties of ridge functions are described. This book also describes properties of generalized ridge functions, and their relation to linear superpositions and Kolmogorov's famous superposition theorem. In the final part of the book, a single and two hidden layer neural networks are discussed. The results obtained in this part are based on properties of ordinary and generalized ridge functions. Novel aspects of the universal approximation property of feedforward neural networks are revealed. This book will be of interest to advanced graduate students and researchers working in functional analysis, approximation theory, and the theory of real functions, and will be of particular interest to those wishing to learn more about neural network theory and applications and other areas where ridge functions are used.

The Day of the Lord texts of Malachi (Mal 3:2, 7; 4:5) demonstrate that he seems to allude to Joel’s Day of the Lord (2:11, 13, 31 [MT 3:4]). Malachi’s Day of the Lord seems to have a strong inner-biblical relationship with the Day of the Lord motif of Joel. A significant interpretive loss is committed when allusion is recognized in the source text but ignored and not explored. Thus, the passages themselves call for an inner-biblical allusion study. In addition, the interpretive significance of Joel’s Day of the Lord in Malachi has not been investigated comprehensively as the review of literature and intertextual and inner-biblical studies on Malachi validated. Thus, these are the interrelated questions: (a) “What are the criteria to verify the inner-biblical connection between Malachi and Joel on the Day of the Lord?” (b) “How did Malachi use Joel’s Day of the Lord motif?” (c) “How did Malachi develop the Day of the Lord theme in his book?” There are three purposes of this study. The first is to identify objective criteria to verify the inner-biblical connection between Malachi and Joel on the Day of the Lord. The second is to determine how Malachi used Joel’s Day of the Lord motif. The last is to ascertain how Malachi developed the Day of the Lord theme in his book.

In few areas of critical Old Testament research is the chasm between evangelical and mainstream scholarship as broad as in discussions of the book of Deuteronomy. The issues relate not only to the provenance of the book, but also to its origin and composition, its ideology, its ethic, and its relationship to other biblical books. Evangelicals differ in their responses to historical-critical scholarship. Some avoid it as much as possible; others consider neither critical methodologies nor the results of critical scholarship to be threatening to their evangelical convictions. The essays in Sepher Torath Mosheh consist of invited papers that were presented at a special colloquium on the book of Deuteronomy at Wheaton College in the fall of 2015. Their purpose is to explore historical, literary, theological, and ethical issues at the heart of the tensions evangelicals feel with regard to mainstream scholarship on Deuteronomy. Although the contributors represent a broad spectrum of theological and hermeneutical perspectives within evangelicalism, they all subscribe to the statement on Scripture that unites the fellows of the Institute for Biblical Research: belief in "the unique divine inspiration, integrity, and authority of the Bible."
