Book Description
Jefferson Hunter examines English films and television dramas as they relate to English culture in the 20th century. He traces themes such as the influence of U.S. crime drama on English film, and film adaptations of literary works as they appear in screen work from the 1930s to the present. A Canterbury Tale and the documentary Listen to Britain are analyzed in the context of village pageants and other wartime explorations of Englishness at risk. English crime dramas are set against the writings of George Orwell, while a famous line from Noel Coward leads to a discussion of music and image in works like Brief Encounter and Look Back in Anger. Screen adaptation is also broached in analyses of the 1985 BBC version of Dickens's Bleak House and Merchant-Ivory's The Remains of the Day.

Book Description
Sweeping across two millennia and every literary genre, acclaimed scholar and biographer Jonathan Bate provides a dazzling introduction to English Literature. The focus is wide, shifting from the birth of the novel and the brilliance of English comedy to the deep Englishness of landscape poetry and the ethnic diversity of Britain's Nobel literature laureates. It goes on to provide a more in-depth analysis, with close readings from an extraordinary scene in King Lear to a war poem by Carol Ann Duffy, and a series of striking examples of how literary texts change as they are transmitted from writer to reader. The narrative embraces not only the major literary movements such as Romanticism and Modernism, together with the most influential authors including Chaucer, Donne, Johnson, Wordsworth, Austen, Dickens and Woolf, but also little-known stories such as the identity of the first English woman poet to be honoured with a collected edition of her works. Written with the flair and passion for which Jonathan Bate has become renowned, this book is the perfect Very Short Introduction for all readers and students of the incomparable literary heritage of these islands. Book Description
C. Subramania Bharati (1882-1921) was one of the builders of modern India. An early nationalist thinker from South India, Bharati's literary genius ignited a Renaissance in the literature of his native language, Tamil. He is known as the Mahakavi (supreme poet) of the Tamils. Bharati can lay the claim to being one of India's foremost egalitarian writers, arguing for the supremacy of women and the irrelevance of caste. The popularity of his songs during the freedom movement, long after his death, led to the government of India 'giving' the copyright of his works to the people of India as a gift. The book is a collection of the entirety of Bharati's own, original writings in English, edited and annotated with an introduction. It includes a variety of short essays and poems, journalistic pieces and historical essays--offering uniquely Indian perspectives on local, national, and international events of the day--to intensely personal journal entries exploring his fear of death, and his fascination with personal mastery of the mind and self.
