Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary Lessons With Numerical Examples in Practical Mechanics and Machine Design Self conceit and real ignorance are supposed to be the characteristics of their most energetic readers. The teaching power of this collection of examples has already been well tried. Students who have gone through them show that they have obtained a real working knowledge of the application of the principles of Mechanics to Engineering and Machine Design, and that their knowledge is always ready for use. Each exercise fixes firmly in the mind of the student the fact that a certain principle is of importance outside examination rooms. He is not tempted to calculate in cases where actual experimental trial and observation will show him the best solution of a problem, and when he works out an answer which every practical illiterate mechanic knows to be ten times too great, he will not compla cently rest satisfied with this absurd answer and talk about its being theoretically right. Rankine has found the following values of k: --For such cases as propeller-shafts k varies from-25 to-5. For ordinary light shafting in mills... k -75 to-1. And for crank-shafts and other heavy For each of the cases above mentioned deduce the constant a in the simple formula for the diameter Note.--The values here found agree with values of the multiplier c given at page 99. 9. Find the two equal stresses (tensile and shear) which combined will produce a resultant tensile stress of 66,000 lb. per sq. inch. 10. A cylindric shaft transmits 30 HP at 150 revolutions per minute, and is subjected to a bending moment equal to the twisting moment; find the diameter of the shaft, if the safe shear stress of the material is 9,000 lb. per sq. inch. ANSWEES. 1. Yes. The resultant stress is 5 6 tons per square inch. 2. 6,057-8 lb. per square inch. 3. 6,428 lb. per square inch LESSON XXIV. OVERHUNG CBANK. CRANK-PINS. LENGTHS OP BEARINGS, ETC. A Very good illustration of combined twisting and bending actions is the case of an overhung crank (Fig. 58). Let P be the total push, or pull, of the connectingrod at right angles to the direction of the crank. Fig. 68. Then T = P x A C, and M = P x B C, the resultants of all the forces acting on the journal and crank-pin being assumed to pass through their centres respectively. Then using our rule for combining twisting and bending moments, we have--T( = PxBC + x B C)2 + (P x AC)"2 = PBC + V/b C2 + A C2.-. Te = P (B C + A B). Hence we calculate the twisting moment for an overhung crank as if the crank were of a length equal to the horizontal distance B C, plus the sloping distance A B....

Book Description
Excerpt from Applied Mechanics: An Elementary General Introduction to the Theory of Structures and Machines; With Diagrams, Illustrations, and Examples Or: the author's appointment to lecture on Mechanics in the Royal Naval College, a course of elementary lessons was commenced, based on Raxmx's well-known treatise, with such assistawc as could be obtained from other sources. After some years this course assumed a tolerably permanent form, and it was thought desirable to print it, partly From the inconvenience to students of being exclusively depen dent on an] instruction, and partly from an idea that it might be used'nl to others besides those who were immediately addressed. The place which these lectures occupy in the programme of the College Will be found explained in an Appendix. Book Description
Excerpt from A Text-Book of Mechanical Drawing and Elementary Machine Design To properly prepare students for advanced machine design it has been found necessary to introduce a course designed to apply the principles of mechanical drawing to the solution of practical problems in machine construction and to familiarize the student with the arrangement and proportions of the most important machines and their details recognized by competent engineers to be the best practice of the present time. It is essential to intelligent study and an economical expenditure of time and labor that, before attempting to design a new machine or improve an old one, the student should post himself with all possible information concerning what has already been done in the same direction. To this end the present work has been prepared. In it we have attempted to show what is the best United States practice in the design and construction of various machines and details of machines, using rules and formulae whenever feasible in working out practical problems. Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary Mechanics for the Practical Engineer: Engineers' Study Course From Power The subject matter of this book is an exact reproduction of a series of thirty lessons which appeared in Power as a part of the Engineers' Study Course. These lessons were intended as Home Study for those who had followed the previous courses given in Power. Each lesson was so arranged that the average home study student could thoroughly master the material given each week, before proceeding with the next lesson. To drive home the principles given, five study questions were inserted each week and the student was urged to solve these problems before referring to the answers which appeared in the next lesson. The fact that these questions combined with their answers formed a vital part of the original course is the author's only excuse for the manner in which they appear in the text. Book Description
Excerpt from The Theory of Machines: The Principles of Mechanism; Elementary Mechanics of Machines The present treatise dealing with the Principles of Mechanism and Mechanics of Machinery is the result of a number of years' experience in teaching the subjects and in practising engineering, and endeavors to deal with problems of fairly common occur rence. It is intended to cover the needs of the beginner in the study of the science of machinery, and also to take up a number of the advanced problems in mechanics. As the engineer uses the drafting board very freely in the solution of his problems, the author has devised graphical solu tions throughout, and only in a very few instances has he used formulae involving anything more than elementary trigonometry and algebra. The two or three cases involving the calculus may be omitted without detracting much from the usefulness of the book. The reader must remember that the book does not deal with machine design, and as the drawings have been made for the special purpose of illustrating the principles under discussion, the mechanical details have frequently been omitted, and in cer tain cases the proportions somewhat modified so as to make the constructions employed clearer.
