The question of why we need to think about how we research race demands a conceptualization of race that captures both its social construction and its temporal evolution. This book critically examines how race is constructed globally to intersect gender, class, sexuality, language ability and religion and answers some very important questions, like how does anti-black racism manifest itself within various contexts? Chapters in the book use the ‘Black and White paradigm’ as a lens for critical race analysis examining how, for example, the saliency of race and Blackness shape the ‘post-colony’, as well as the various ‘post’ colonial nations. The paradigm centers Whiteness as the lens of defining what and what is different. The negative portrayal of difference is anchored in the sanctity of Whiteness. It is through such analysis that we can understand how historically colour has been a permanent marker of differentiation even though it has not been the only one. It is through conversations and dialogue in the classroom that the book was created; given the current political shift in American and the rise of Anti-Blackness, anti-Indigeneity, Islamophobia and xenophobia. Based on a study among higher-educated adult children of lower-class Turkish and Moroccan immigrants in the Netherlands, this open access book explores processes of identification among social climbers with ethnic minority backgrounds. Using both survey data and open interviews with these ‘minority climbers’, the study details the contextual and temporal nature of identification. The results illustrate how ethnicity is contextual but have tangible and inescapable effects at the same time. Also the findings call for a more reflexive use of terms like ethnic ingroup/outgroup and bonding/bridging. Overall, the book helps us understand the emergence of middle-class segments that articulate their minority identities and as such it will be of great interest to academics, policy makers and all those interested in processes of integration and/or diversity.

The word fundamentalism usually conjures up images of religions and their most zealous followers. Much less often the word appears in connection with political economy. The phrase “free market” gives the connotation that capitalism is freedom. Neoliberalism is the rise of global free-market fundamentalism.
