Book Description
Excerpt from Dante and AquinasThe purpose of this book is, in the first instance, to bring out this special significance of Dante's work by helping to throw out its distinctive features against the background of the accepted and authoritative exposition of the received philo sophy and theology of his time, while at the same time enriching his utterances by relating them to the implications and presuppositions on which they are grounded. But I trust that the sketch of the scholastic philosophy, and especially of the teaching of Aquinas, necessarily subordinate as it is, may have some independent value, and may be found useful to many whose interest, or at the lowest curiosity, has been roused in relation to mediaeval philosophy, and who do not know where to turn for a disinterested and popular treat ment of the subject free from all propagandis't or polemical intention.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Dante's Ten Heavens: A Study of the Paradiso In this second edition portions have been largely revised, but the work as a whole remains the same. I have mainly followed Witte's text of the Divina Commedia, though not invariably. The Minor Works, with the exception of one or two passages from the Canzoni, are quoted from the Oxford Dante. The translation of the De Monarchia quoted is always Mr. Church's; that of the Divina Commedia is for the most part Longfellow's, excepting where no name is appended. The Convivio is my own, though it owes much to Miss Hillard's version, which I had adopted in the first edition. For the Second Part of the Summa Theologiea I have frequently availed myself of the abbreviated version in Aquinas Ethi cus. The appended list of books is not a complete bibliography, but merely represents the works more frequently consulted or found more helpful. Book Description
Excerpt from Dante and Other Waning Classics Literature takes man as he is; it roots itself in human nature and material as well as spiritual desires; it shows us the individual with his impulses to exercise all his faculties and satisfy his instincts. Theology is taken up with devotion and repentance; it aims after piety; it wishes to dehumanize man. If literature is to be made a study of human nature, wrote Cardinal Newman, who certainly was no enemy of theology. Excerpt from The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri, Vol. 3 Proem. - Invocation. -beatrice and Dante ascend to the Sphere of Fire - Beatrice explains the cause of their ascent. The glory of Him who moves everything peneo trates through the universe, and shines in one part more and in another less. In the heaven that receives most of its light I have been, and have seen things which he who descends from there above neither knows how nor is able to recount; because, drawing near to its own desire,1 our under standing enters so deep, that the memory cannot follow. Truly whatever of the Holy Realm I could treasure up in my mind shall now be the theme of my song. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Tennyson There may seem to be some alxilogy'necesm'for adding to the vast volume of Dante literature. It is true that there is no lack of Essays on isolated points, general lntrfxluctions and detailed Commentaries but of simple and popular Exposition, of the Guam-did, canto by canto, there exists very little in our language. 'to present such an eslmsition, bringing out the general bearing and scope of Dante's ethical teaching, is the chief purpose of this volume. Lere niceties and in genuities of interpretation have been avoided as far as possible. It is the author's belief that Dante's symbolism is not really so obscure and intricate as it appears to a beginner, and that once the clue is gained, it leads to the broad highway of universal morality. His aim is to remove the impression of arbitrariness which Dante's punishments -leave. On many minds. By showing that in the main they are, in material, visible and symbolic forms, the natural and inevitable moral and spiritual issues of the various sins. In this exposition constant reference is made to the writings of Dante's great ethical authorities. Aristotle. And Thomas Aquinas; but above all Dante is regarded.
