Book Description
Critical Infrastructures: State of the Art in Research and Application, comprising a selection of reviewed and edited contributions from all over the world, aims to shed light on the various aspects of critical infrastructures. The editors of this book have opted for a broad view on the various criticality aspects on infrastructures itself as well as contributions that discuss the institutional and technical environment of critical infrastructures which are crucial for their proper functioning. Critical Infrastructures brings to light a number of eye-opening critical issues that have been only marginally touched upon in research and practice. Hence, the book is an indispensable resource for infrastructure policy makers, managers, consultants and researchers alike. The book is divided into four sections: *Vulnerability and Risk; *System Development and Adaptation; *Institutional Change; *Capacity Management.

Book Description
The Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES), administered by the National Science Foundation (NSF), is scheduled to become operational in 2004. These network sites will perform a range of experiments to test and validate complex computer models being developed to simulate the behavior of structures subjected to earthquakes. To assist in this effort, the NSF requested the National Research Council(NRC) to frame the major questions to be addressed by and to develop a long-term research agenda for NEES. Preventing Earthquake Disasters presents an overview of the grand challenge including six critical research problems making up that challenge. The report also provides an assessment of earthquake engineering research issues and the role of information technology in that research effort, and a research plan for NEES.

Book Description
Prepared by the Council on Disaster Reduction and Earthquake Investigation Committee of Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering of ASCE. This TCLEE Monograph details the effects of two earthquakes that occurred in El Salvador on January 13 and February 13, 2001. The first earthquake had a magnitude of 7.6, and the second had a magnitude of 6.6. Catastrophic damage was estimated at $1.6 billion. Significant lifeline disruption was the result of landslides, which closed the major Pan American Highway and the highway to the international airport and disrupted power, communication, street lighting, roads and water systems.

Book Description
Originally published in 2005. By weaving together three distinct fields - public policy, technology studies and management of critical infrastructure - this volume shows how public policy can help to improve the management of large technical systems. A much-needed analytical framework, based on approaches drawn from established work in science and technology studies, is applied to a case study of the development of a new public safety service for mobile telephones. This example of emerging growth and change in critical infrastructure allows Gordon Gow to identify current problem areas and to refine a more general set of strategies aimed at improving public policy processes in the management of technology. The work also discusses a range of contemporary issues in telecom policy and regulation, such as public consultation, technical standards, network unbundling and interconnection. This insightful work provides observations and recommendations for policy makers, regulators, industry and consumer groups alike, furthering the improved coordination of efforts across these domains of interest.

Book Description
Prepared by the Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering of ASCE. This TCLEE Monograph studies seven large lifeline organizations that have undertaken significant seismic improvement programs. In spite of often-cited barriers to natural hazards risk reduction, these organizations demonstrate a variety of ways to start and sustain risk-reduction programs. In these economically and politically robust organizations, top-level managers and high-level inside technical seismic advocates learned from the damage done by past earthquakes to their systems or similar systems and from research and educational programs. Then, each group developed an overall view of its system's earthquake vulnerabilities and devised adaptable, incremental seismic implementation programs.

Book Description
Prepared by the Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering of ASCE. This TCLEE Monograph details the effects of the Nisqually, Washington, earthquake of February 28, 2001. Despite the magnitude of this 6.8 earthquake, only moderate damage was reported on older structures, and minimal damage was reported on newer engineered buildings. Although catastrophic damage did not occur, investigators did find some significant damage to the lifeline infrastructure, particularly roads, bridges, and the Sea-Tac airport control tower. Topics include geoscience and geotechnical aspects, highway systems, power systems, water supply, wastewater, railways, gas and liquid fuels, communications, airports, marine facilities, fire department response, and hazardous materials.

Book Description
Prepared by the Earthquake Investigation Committee of the Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering of ASCE. This TCLEE Monograph describes the performance of lifelines in two earthquakes: the Gujarat earthquake of January 26, 2001, and the Napa earthquake of September 3, 2000. The Gujarat earthquake severely struck the Kutch District of the Gujarat State, India, and resulted in about 17,000 fatalities, 150,000 injuries, and left more than 500,000 homeless. The most heavily damaged lifelines were water and electric power. Other lifelines were substantially affected included communications, wastewater, ports, railways, highways, roads, and bridges. The Napa Earthquake was a moderate-sized earthquake in California. Recorded peak ground accelerations were as high as 0.49g, with a recorded peak ground velocity of 15 inches per second. This report presents the findings for the following lifelines: water, telephone, highways, railroads, ports, hospitals, airports, fire department response, radio communications, highway bridges, electric, and natural gas.

Book Description
Prepared by the Post Earthquake Investigation Committee of the Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering of ASCE. In the late afternoon of June 23, 2001, a colossal earthquake with a magnitude of 8.4 MW took place in the coastal waters off the District of Arequipa and the town of Atico, Peru. The magnitude of the event made it the largest in the world in the previous 25 years. This earthquake caused nearly 2,000 deaths and 3,000 injuries; 26,000 homes were destroyed; 34,000 homes were damaged; and 190,000 people were left homeless. This report highlights results of a reconnaissance to investigate the damage and impacts to the various lifelines: water, railroads, highway systems, power systems, airports, and communications. The main geotechnical feature of this event was shaking induced landslides, rock falls, and subsidence associated with poorly compacted fills, steep cut slopes, and differential settlement at cut/fill interfaces.

Book Description
Prepared by the Earthquake Investigations Committee of the Technical Council of Lifeline Earthquake Engineering ASCE. This TCLEE Monograph summarizes the damage done to various lifelines from the 6.8 Mw earthquake that occurred in the coastal waters off the Boumerdes Department, east of Algiers, Algeria, on May 21, 2003. An estimated 2,266 people were killed, 10,260 injured, and more than 200,000 left homeless. Many of the three- to five-story reinforced concrete apartment buildings, less than three years old, were destroyed by either total or partial collapse. Topics include: geosciences and geotechnical engineering; general building damage; potable water systems; power systems; the highway system; ports and airports; railroads; communication systems; oil and liquid fuels; hospitals; and emergency response. Readers will benefit from the lessons learned sections, which analyze other lifeline systems and compare expected earthquake performance, thus helping to minimize damage, save money, and reduce recovery time.
