Book Description
Control breeds fear. Fear forces submission. Submission becomes Habit. Bound by fear and oppression of "would-be protectors," the Creature of Habit is restricted to a life of sameness and isolation...until his spark of curiosity can be suppressed no longer. Desperate to find answers beyond the Compound walls where he lives, Creature disobeys his protector and embarks on a quest to find "unfettered thought and freedom." Along the way, he grapples with deep-seeded feelings of worthlessness and insignificance, as well as habitually self-destructive behaviors. Forced to look at the painful realities in his life, Creature discovers that the freedom he seeks is not at the end of a physical journey, but at the end of a spiritual one-his own. Guided by the wisdom of those who have gone before, the Creature of Habit must summon great inner strength to face his fears and throw off the lies of his past. Only then can he embrace genuine hope and find true unfettered thought and emotional freedom.

Book Description
A story for creatures of habit big and small who might be surprised by the joy of trying something new. On the island of Habit, there lives a very big creature with big teeth, big eyes, and very big feet. Every day the creature does the exact same things in the exact same order. He gets up in the morning, eats three pineapples and two bananas, collects shells, says hello to the fish, rocks, trees, and crabs of the island before he eats three more pineapples and two bananas, and finally goes to bed. It is exactly the way the big creature likes it. That is, until a small boat carrying a very small creature with small teeth, small eyes, and very, very small feet arrives on the island. At first the big creature is excited to show the little creature around and explain how things are done on the island, but the small creature has his own ideas. He does not like pineapples or bananas, but he does like coconuts. Instead of saying hello to the fish, he swims with them. And instead of collecting shells, he collects...well, everything else. Also, the little creature does something different every day--it's madness, thinks the big creature. Can these two creatures learn to appreciate each other? Is the island big enough for both of them? Told with heart and humor, this is a story about being open to new ways of doing things.

Book Description
Part III concentrates on negotiation and communication skills that are often the most crucial aspects of successful crisis management programs. The final section of this book is about healing and has been gathered from a variety of sources. In particular, the chapter on grief and loss is the result of interviewing many people around the world over the past 15 years, in the wake of a variety of tragedies. This section of the book also looks at practical ways to cope with the aftermath of crisis, including stress management techniques, various forms of traditional and alternative therapies, and the use of humor as a defense mechanism and coping strategy. One of the purposes of this book is to gather practical information and to organize and consolidate it for easy reference. Although this book was originally written for teachers, it will also prove helpful to anyone who is associated with schools."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Description
This volume collects thirteen of David Schmidtz's essays on the question of what it takes to live a good life, given that we live in a social and natural world. Part One defends a non-maximizing conception of rational choice, explains how even ultimate goals can be rationally chosen, defends the rationality of concern and regard for others (even to the point of being willing to die for a cause), and explains why decision theory is necessarily incomplete as a tool for addressing such issues. Part Two uses the tools of analytic philosophy to explain what we can do to be deserving ,what is wrong with the idea that we ought to do as much good as we can, why mutual aid is good, but why the welfare state does not work as a way of institutionalizing mutual aid, and why transferring wealth from those who need it less to those who need it more can be a bad idea even from a utilitarian perspective. Most ambitiously, Part Two offers an overarching, pluralistic moral theory that defines the nature and limits of our obligations to each other and to our individual selves. Part Three discusses the history and economic logic of alternative property institutions, both private and communal, and explains why economic logic is an indispensable tool in the field of environmental conflict resolution. In the final essay, Schmidtz brings the volume full circle by considering the nature and limits of our obligations to nonhuman species, and how the status of nonhuman species ought to enter into our deliberations about what sort of life is worth living.

Book Description
In No Professor's Lectures Can Save Us, John J. Stuhr utilizes the thought of American philosopher and psychologist William James to develop an original world view that addresses both enduring philosophical problems and contemporary cultural issues. Drawing on and illuminating the entirety of James's work, Stuhr explores James's psychology, his account of religious experience and his "will to believe" thesis, his pragmatism, his radical empiricism, his pluralism, and his writing on politics, democracy, and imperialism. Throughout, Stuhr engages the wide-ranging scholarship on James's philosophy and explores connections between James and the work of Bergson, Deleuze, Dewey, Peirce, Rorty, and Whitehead, as well as intellectual movements including contemporary democratic theory, positive psychology, and philosophical naturalism. After establishing the need to approach James's writings as intimately interwoven, Stuhr turns to each of James's major texts, including The Will to Believe, Principles of Psychology, Varieties of Religious Experience, Pragmatism, The Meaning of Truth, and Essays in Radical Empiricism. His focus throughout is practical, showing the concrete differences it makes in one's life should one take up a broadly Jamesian perspective across the "ever not quite" endeavors of our finite lives. "From this unsparing practical ordeal," James noted, "no professor's lectures and no array of books can save us." In this spirit, this book does not by itself, promise salvation. Instead, it is a master class not only in the philosophy of William James but in a new philosophy through James's thought.

Book Description
What moves us to give gifts to other people? The Gift brings together perspectives on gift exchange and reciprocity from different social scientific disciplines. The first part of this book contains anthropological and sociological 'classics' on gift giving and reciprocity. In the second part the focus is on social psychological theories, and on empirical research on gift giving in Western society. Finally, the main concepts underlying gift exchange - reciprocity, self-interest and altruism - are discussed. Here, the focus is on fundamental assumptions about human nature. Altruism and self-interest turn out to be much more interwoven than we are inclined to think.
