Book Description
PROF. DR. anus PEETERS PRESIDENT- ExECUTIVE DIRECTOR, POLICY RESEARCH CORPORATION N. V. The "Strategies for Global and Regional Ports" confirms that container shipping in the wider Caribbean is in for tumultuous development in the years to come. One of the driving forces behind the momentous changes expected in the provision of maritime liner services in the region, is the growing reliance by major container carriers on multi-layered transhipment concepts and hub ports. Given its favourable location at the junction of North-South and East West trades, the Caribbean region is increasingly becoming a crucial factor in the service pattern of major carriers. As a result, global terminal operating companies such as Hutchison Port Holdings and Stevedoring Services of America, are already tapping the potential for developing port activity that was, until recently, dormant. In anticipation of the new shipping patterns to emerge in the coming months and years, major political decisions with respect to shipping and port development need to be taken by Caribbean Governments. Many of these decisions will be made under pressure of well meaning lobbies, but which do not always have the necessary insight into liner shipping developments. The Netherlands Antilles is one of those nations whose ports are at a crossroads and may either become regional hub ports or turn into feeder ports. In view of the changes in the Caribbean maritime geography, the Ministry of Traffic and Transport of the Netherlands Antilles commissioned Policy Research Corporation N.

Book Description
This book maintains that container shipping is vital to the actualisation of globalisation, and that without it, globalisation would remain a concept rather than reality. It argues that container shipping has been academically overlooked as a global business sector in favour of more prominent sectors such as oil or arms trade, and aims to provide a complete history of containerisation from the 1950s to the turn of the millennium. This history explores the growth of the container industry due to prominent innovation in vessel design, early adoption of the internet, large international mergers, and significant physical alterations to the global port system. With particular emphasis on the east-west trade, the chapters cover the growth and development of the container industry, to the social changes experienced by seafaring labour forces, the cultural impact of the container - bringing a domineering land-presence to maritime activity, through to the environmental concerns surrounding the industry. The study is not a quantitative economic analysis of the industry, rather, an updated history that strives to demonstrate the importance of transport infrastructures to any consideration of global business sectors, by providing evidence of the container industry’s stimulation of the global economy.

Book Description
This work applies the theory and techniques of economic efficiency measurement to the realistic context of the ports industry. The objective is to assess the practical impact of port privatization policies upon the economic performance of the sector. Specifically, this volume presents Korea’s port and terminal development plans and systematically analyses not only the process and results of privatisation, but also the claims of its proponents that it leads directly to improved efficiency. The Korean experience is given global relevance by applying the same approach to Britain’s main container ports and terminals which, of course, are at a more advanced stage in the privatisation process. This work constitutes a unique contribution to the literature relating to shipping and ports, econometrics and the Korean economy and will be of primary interest to port authorities and practitioners, as well as to students of economics and/or the shipping industry.
