Book Description
This knowledge product explains the rationale and procedures for incorporating allowances for climate change in detailed engineering design, with a focus on credible adjustments to extreme rainfall and to mean and high-end sea-level rise. Highlighting worked examples drawn from Viet Nam's road transport sector and peer-reviewed research literature, it offers a point of departure for more sophisticated assessments of high-risk projects. It presents principles and approaches extendable to other design variables (extreme air temperature, evaporation, and wind speed) and transferable to other sectors, regions, and stages of the asset life cycle (from project concept to decommissioning). An accompanying step-by-step manual shows how each calculation is performed.

Book Description
This step-by-step manual describes procedures for climate change adjustments relative to extreme rainfall and local sea level estimates. The principles presented are based on worked examples discussed in the knowledge product accompanied by this manual. While the overall approach on climate change adjustment procedures and calculations are intended to be as transparent as possible, key sources of information and assumptions are open to scrutiny as some elements may be affected by rapid advancements in science and technology. It is essential for data to be periodically reviewed, in line with the latest reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Book Description
Rural Road Engineering in Developing Countries provides a comprehensive coverage of the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of rural roads in developing countries and emerging nations. It covers a wide range of technical and non-technical problems that may confront road engineers working in the developing world, focusing on rural roads which provide important links from villages and farms to markets and offer the public access to health, education, and other services essential for sustainable development. Most textbooks on road engineering are based on experience in industrialised countries with temperate climates or deal only with specific issues, with many aspects of the design and construction of roads in developing regions stemming from inappropriate research undertaken in Europe and the USA. These approaches are frequently unsuitable and unsustainable for rural road network environments, particularly in low to middle income countries. This book takes on board a more recent research and application focus on rural roads, integrating it for a broad range of readers to access current information on good practice for sustainable road engineering in developing countries. The book particularly suits transportation engineers, development professionals, and graduate students in civil engineering.

Book Description
This report reviews the evidence to establish which sources of sea-level rise projections are credible for the Pacific islands region. It examines the strengths, weaknesses, and uncertainties associated with various sources of information on sea-level rise in the Pacific. It aims to provide advisory standards for the planning, testing, and design of Asian Development Bank projects in the area.

Book Description
"Climate change is projected to continue to pose as a challenge to existing transport infrastructure particularly roads, bridges, and drainage. Therefore, in order to meet these challenges, road authorities, decision-makers, and planners must have access to full information and have an appreciation of the possible future impacts of climate change on their road assets. This information could then be incorporated into their transport infrastructure planning, design, construction, and maintenance processes and decisions and eventually transformed into concrete actions to ensure that road assets and related transport infrastructure: * climate resilient; and * able to adapt to the changing environment."--Executive summary.

Book Description
While every mode of transportation in the U.S. will be affected as the climate changes, potentially the greatest impact on transportation systems will be flooding of roads, railways, transit systems, and airport runways in coastal areas because of rising sea levels and surges brought on by more intense storms, says a new report from the National Research Council. Though the impacts of climate change will vary by region, it is certain they will be widespread and costly in human and economic terms, and will require significant changes in the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of transportation systems. The U.S. transportation system was designed and built for local weather and climate conditions, predicated on historical temperature and precipitation data. The report finds that climate predictions used by transportation planners and engineers may no longer be reliable, however, in the face of new weather and climate extremes. Infrastructure pushed beyond the range for which it was designed can become stressed and fail, as seen with loss of the U.S. 90 Bridge in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Book Description
This regional study includes the People's Republic of China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and Mongolia and examines how strategies for adapting to climate change up to 2050 can be combined with measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in East Asia. Besides discussing climate model results for costs of adaptation in infrastructure, coastal protection, and agriculture, the study estimates costs for sector-specific mitigation options and the total abatement potential for 2020 and 2030. Long-term strategies for addressing the impacts of climate change in East Asia are explored with a focus on the linkages between adaptation and mitigation taking account uncertainty about key climate variables. Finally, it discusses opportunities for enhancing the effectiveness of some critical climate change policies such as regional carbon market.

Book Description
This book brings together a selection of the scientific results of the RI ADAPTCLIM project (International Network on Risk Assessment and Climatic Adaptation of Civil Engineering and Buildings Works). Funded by the Pays de la Loire region in France as part of the 2014 Stratégie Internationale call for projects, research teams from the scientific group LiRGeC (ECN, UN, IFSTTAR, CSTB) and several international partners contributed their human, experimental and digital resources. RI-ADAPTCLIM was established to study the short- and medium term effects of climatic conditions on buildings, infrastructures and the ground. Following an integrated, interdisciplinary and multi-physics approach, the researchers proposed decision support tools that would increase the resilience of structures and buildings against the impact of hazards due to climate change.

Book Description
The transport sector is key to the continued economic development of Asia and the Pacific. By improving connectivity and making the movement of goods and people more affordable, transport contributes to economic growth, efficiency, and competitiveness while providing poor people with access to economic opportunities and services. Various components of the transport infrastructure are exposed and vulnerableto climate change. This is of particular concern to countries in Asia and the Pacific which will experience significant adverse impacts from a changing climate. The Asian Development Bank has put in place a systematic framework guiding the conduct of climate risk and vulnerability assessments of investment projects. Ongoing initiatives will address some of the key challenges encountered when conducting climate risk and vulnerability assessments, including access to readily available climate change information.

Book Description
Adapting Agriculture to Climate Change is a fundamental resource for primary industry professionals, land managers, policy makers, researchers and students involved in preparing Australia’s primary industries for the challenges and opportunities of climate change. More than 30 authors have contributed to this book, which moves beyond describing the causes and consequences of climate change to providing options for people to work towards adaptation action. Climate change implications and adaptation options are given for the key Australian primary industries of horticulture, forestry, grains, rice, sugarcane, cotton, viticulture, broadacre grazing, intensive livestock industries, marine fisheries, and aquaculture and water resources. Case studies demonstrate the options for each industry. Adapting Agriculture to Climate Change summarises updated climate change scenarios for Australia with the latest climate science. It includes chapters on socio-economic and institutional considerations for adapting to climate change, greenhouse gas emissions sources and sinks, as well as risks and priorities for the future.
