Book Description
A revealing account of Swiss intelligence operations during WWII, including a secret backchannel between Switzerland and Nazi Germany. During World War II, Col. Roger Masson, the head of Swiss Intelligence, maintained a secret link to the German Chief of Espionage, SS Gen. Walter Schellenberg. With access to previously inaccessible documents, including newly discovered material in American archives, historian Pierre Braunschweig fully illuminates this connection for the first time, along with surprising new details about the military threats Switzerland faced in March 1943. During World War II, Switzerland was famous as a center of espionage fielded by Allies and Axis alike. Less has been known, however, about Switzerland’s own intelligence activities, including its secret sources in Hitler’s councils and its counterespionage program at home. In Secret Channel to Berlin, Braunschweig details the functions of Swiss Intelligence during World War II and sheds new light on conflicts between Swiss Intelligence and the federal government in Bern, as well as within the intelligence service itself.

The new edition features an additional 11 clinical scenarios, all presented in the same standardised format to help you to improve your: * data gathering – a broad range of appropriate questions to ask the patient are provided and red flags are highlighted where appropriate * interpersonal skills – each clinical problem is described using terms that you can use in your explanations to patients * clinical management – tells you which examinations to consider, which investigations to order, and how to manage each clinical problem based on the latest guidelines and current best practice * consultations – to help you practise, every clinical case features a realistic role play scenario, all of which have been extended with additional information in the new edition. Every clinical scenario in this new edition has been updated and new appendices have been added to cover driving and the latest DVLA guidelines, and when to suspect child maltreatment. The book is designed to be used as a workbook, with wide margins to allow you to add in your own notes, questions and other aides-memoires. Used in this way, CSA Revision Notes for the MRCGP is the ideal book to help you successfully prepare for the exam. From reviews of the first edition: “Following the glowing reviews of this book I bought it for my CSA preparation. It is a very well written book and a good resource for the CSA. I like the lay out with different case scenarios presented in the CSA style of – data gathering, interpersonal skills and clinical management. I like the open questions and focused questions for each scenario and the role play idea at the end of each case scenario. Interestingly this is the recommended read from our VTS programme.”

Book Description
Ca2+ signaling in neurons is characterized by highly restricted and dynamic gradients called Ca2+ waves, spikes, transients and puffs depending upon their corresponding spatial and temporal features. Based on this strict segmentation the Ca2+ ion provides a versatile basis for complex signaling in neuronal subcompartments with a spatial resolution of micro- and nanodomains. The multitude of Ca2+-regulated processes requires specialized downstream processing machinery, translating the Ca2+ signal into alterations of cellular processes. The broad range of different Ca2+-triggered phenomena in neurons, ranging from neurotransmission to gene expression, is reflected by the existence of a multitude of different Ca2+-binding proteins (CaBPs) from which numerous belong to the EF-hand super-family. EF-hand proteins can be subdivided into Ca2+ buffer and Ca2+ sensor proteins. Whereas the first group has a very high affinity for Ca2+, exhibits little conformational change in the Ca2+-bound state and is thought to mainly chelate Ca2+, the second group has a lower affinity for Ca2+ and shows considerable conformational changes upon Ca2+-binding, which usually triggers a target interaction. Neuronal calcium sensor (NCS) proteins and the related Caldendrin/CaBP/Calneuron (nCaBPs) proteins are members of this latter group. They resemble the structure of their common ancestor Calmodulin (CaM) with four EF-hand Ca2+-binding motifs, of which not all are functional. However, despite their structural homology with CaM, NCS as well as nCaBPs are quite diverse in amino acid sequence. It is therefore surprising that relatively few binding partners have been identified that are not CaM targets and this raises the question of the specificity and function of these interactions. In terms of function, binding of NCS and nCaBP has frequently different consequences than binding of CaM, which substantially increases the versatility of the Ca2+ tool kit. The general idea of this special issue is to provide an overview on the function of neuronal EF-hand calcium-binding proteins in health and disease. But we will not just provide a mere collection of articles to stress the function of each protein. The issue will mainly deal with emerging concepts on Ca2+-signaling/buffering mediated by EF-hand Ca2+-binding proteins. This includes questions like features that define the functional role of a EF-hand calcium sensor in neurons, the conditions that make physiological relevance of a given interaction of a CaBP with its target plausible, the emerging synaptic role of these proteins, and mounting evidence for their role in the regulation of protein trafficking. Structural aspects and biophysical studies will be covered. Another aspect will be the role of CaBPs in brain disease states. This aspect includes studies showing that CaBPs are targets of drugs in clinical use, studies showing that expression levels of calcium-binding proteins are frequently altered in brain disease states as well as reports on mutations in EF-hand calcium sensors linked to human disease.

Book Description
On Popular Music and Its Unruly Entanglements comprises eleven essays that explore the myriad ways in which popular music is entwined within social, cultural, musical, historical, and media networks. The authors discuss genres as diverse as mainstream pop, hip hop, classic rock, instrumental synthwave, video game music, amateur ukelele groups, and audiovisual remixes, while also considering the music’s relationship to technological developments, various media and material(itie)s, and personal and social identity. The collection presents a range of different methodologies and theoretical positions, which results in an eclecticism that aptly demonstrates the breadth of contemporary popular music research. The chapters are divided into three major sections that address: wider theoretical and analytical issues (“Broad Strokes”), familiar repertoire or concepts from a new perspective (“Second Takes”), and the meanings to arise from music’s connections with other media forms (“Audiovisual Entanglements”).

Book Description
MIDI--the Musical Instrument Digital Interface--is the data communications system that enables music equipment, computers, and software from many different manufacturers to exchange information. Since 1983 the impact of MIDI on the design and operation of synthesizers and related equipment has been dramatic. Rothstein's book provides a practical guide for anyone seeking a thorough discussion of the basic principles of MIDI. The text focuses on MIDI hardware and software as a single, integrated system. In addition to describing categories of MIDI instruments, accessories, and personal computer software, Rothstein explains what they do, what to look for in each, and how to get it all to work together. With this book, you will be able to evaluate, assemble, and manage a complex hardware/software MIDI system.
