British sociology was, as is well known, a rather backward child. To be more precise it was not so much a late starter as a slow developer. Its beginnings can be traced back a least to the 18th century, with the remarkable suveys directed by Eden and Sinclair, the original studies of social institutions by Adam Ferguson and John Millar, and – to make picture complete – the sociological angles found in the major works of Hume, Adam Smith and Malthus. The 19th century landscape is dominated by the lonely peak of Herbert Spencer, around which, however, flowed many streams of sociological thought, emanating from historians, philosophers, economists and lawyers who did not expressly identify themselves with the new science of society but nevertheless contributed significantly to its evolution; one thinks of Bentham, Mill, Maine and of the little known work of the National Association for the Promotion of Social Science; and, at the turn of the century of Dicey, Vinogradoff and James Bryce. At the same time appeared the figures whose writings and teaching were to set their stamp on British sociology for many years to come – Booth and Rowntree advancing along the path opened up by Eden and Sinclair, and Hobhouse attacking the basic problems explored by Ferguson and Millar from a new angle reminiscent of the earlier writings of Hume and Adam Smith on religion and morals.

This book is about the development of sociology in Britain told through the story of its learned society, The British Sociological Association. Learned societies have been neglected in the history of the discipline, though they are a vital part of the social structure of academic life. The BSA has had its internal dynamics, but it has also been affected by external factors relevant to wider academic life, which range from government policies to the rise of feminism. These have had an important effect on all the social sciences, but their impact upon sociology has been particularly marked. The first two chapters of the book give a general historical overview, starting with the range of predecessor organisations, and going on to how the BSA came to be founded, the major changes in educational policy and structures which have formed much of the context for its activities, and how it has, in response to both internal and external pressures, changed over time. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Britain stood at the forefront of science and statistics and had a long and respected tradition of social investigation and reform. But it still did not yet have a ‘science of society.’ When, in the early 1900s, a small band of enthusiasts got together to address this situation, the scene was set for a grand synthesis. No such synthesis ever took place and, instead, British sociology has followed a resolutely non-statistical path. Sociology and Statistics in Britain, 1833-1979 investigates how this curious situation came about and attempts to explain it from an historical perspective. It uncovers the prevalence of a deep and instinctive distrust within British sociology of the statistical methodology and mindset, resulting in a mix of quiet indifference and active hostility, which has persisted from its beginnings right up to the present day.
