Book Description
Even though instant communications and strides in transportation have made it easier for individuals to travel and communicate, the great divide across global cultures continues. Nowhere is this more evident than between the cultures of China in the East and the United States in the West. With Chinas elevation to global superpower status, it is vital for Americans to improve their understanding of the principles that are core to the way our friends and counterparts in China think and act. In Confucius Says There Are No Fortune Cookies in China, authors Edward V. Yang, Kate Ou, and Dennis Smith discuss the customs, history, and business practices in China, with an eye toward enhancing relationships through a better understanding of the culture of the East through American eyes. Yang, Ou, and Smith translate more than one hundred combined years of real-world living and working experience in China and across Asia into practical, everyday lessons intended for anyone wishing to build better business and personal relationships in China. This guide contains one hundred lessons, including common sayings, proverbs, idioms, quotes from ancient Chinese philosophers, and the authors own experiences. Yang shares fundamental lessons derived from his personal experienceknowledge gained through his upbringing, through his traditional Chinese and US education, through his work experience in Asia and the United States, and, most importantly, through his mistakes.

Book Description
A young girl sets off on a journey of self-discovery in this “richly atmospheric” tale blending steampunk, adventure, and gothic romance (Kirkus Reviews). With her noticeably large hands and feet, Lena Mattacascar is undoubtedly different. Secretly, she’s wondered if she might actually be Peculiar, and if her father—who left when she was only five years old—may have been Peculiar too. On her eighteenth birthday, Lena receives a letter that inspires her to leave the safety of the City and search for her father in the northern wilderness of Scree—a place inhabited by people whose own unusual characteristics make them unacceptable to modern society. Her journey leads to romance, danger, and a darkness she’s never imagined. For in the wilds of Scree, she must confront her deepest fears . . . “Readers graduating from the stories of C.S. Lewis and Edward Eager will be right at home—and cat lovers will adore Jimson’s employer’s pet, Mrs. Mumbles. McQuerry’s extensive world-building leaves open the possibility of future installments.” —Publishers Weekly

Book Description
"Philosophies of Gratitude is a study of gratitude as a philosophical concept. It explores what past philosophers from Aristotle to Kant have said about gratitude, and examines what role the idea of gratitude has played in their philosophies. It also looks at the three primary ways we think about gratitude - as an emotion we feel in response to a gift or benefit, as an act we perform to express our thankfulness, and as a virtuous disposition in which we are and feel ready to be grateful to the world we inhabit. Like love and trust, gratitude is a way we react to other people in our lives, sometimes for who they are (lovable or trustworthy) and sometimes for what they do (act benevolently towards us). It is a way we feel and act towards others. It is, in other words, a primary way we situate ourselves in relationships. Philosophies of Gratitude examines the key historical moments when gratitude was an important philosophical concept - in classical antiquity, in the early modern era, and in the Enlightenment - in order to discover what gratitude meant for those who produced our fundamental Western notions of ethics. It then examines the forms gratitude assumes - as a feeling, an act, a disposition - in order to discern what role our emotions play in our ethical responses to the world. Finally, it examines what we can say about ingratitude as a response that usually strikes us as base, in other words, as a moment when a human being fails to act morally, but also as a response that sometimes indicates a deeper kind of ethical stand against injustice"--
