Der Krebsatlas entstand aus dem Versuch einer einheitlichen Darstellung der Krebsmortalität in der Bundesrepublik und in den Bundesländern, womit zwei Ziele verfolgt wurden: Einmal sollte eine Übersicht gewonnen werden, in welchen Gegenden der Bundesrepublik sich Unterschiede des Spektrums an Krebskrank heiten erkennen lassen und in welche Richtung sich eine epide miologische Forschung - bei den augenblicklich begrenzten Ressourcen - hinsichtlich der Umweltrisikoforschung vorrangig orientieren sollte. Daß für sinnvolle Analysen mit epidemiologischen Methoden ein direkter Bevölkerungsbezug und darüber hinaus eine sehr viel differenziertere Auswertung von deskriptiven Daten notwendig würden, war dabei von vornherein klar. Die Bemühungen um die kreisweise aufgeschlüsselten Daten, die seit 1975 von allen Statistischen Landesämtern angefordert wurden, ergaben jedoch ein so schlechtes Resultat (nur drei von elf Landesämtern sahen sich in der Lage, die Sterblichkeits-Urdaten auf Magnetband zur Verfügung zu stellen), daß zunächst die Analyse von Aggregatda ten nach ganzen Bundesländern vorgenommen wurde. Das zweite Ziel der Publikation dieses Resultates der Analyse soll daher sein, Hinweise auf die "Problemgebiete" zu geben, die sich bereits in den vorliegenden Karten andeuten. Damit sollte sowohl mehr Interesse als auch stärkere und vor allem verständnisvollere Unterstützung bei dem Vorhaben gewonnen werden, die mit viel Intensität und bundesweit vergleichbar erhobenen Daten für die Forschung nutzbar zu machen.

The preceding decade has seen the production of many cancer at lases. As with other techniques of descriptive epidemiology, these atlases have proved valuable in identifying areas for further re sear~h employing the methods of analytical epidemiology. How ever, the various cancer atlases produceq to date have failed to pro vide a common format of presentation, which has limited their comparability and frustrated in a large measure any attempt to compare risks across national boundaries, boundaries which in terms of environmental exposures may have little meaning. In this volume, many features of cancer atlases are presented and there are discussions on the areas where moves towards standardization could greatly increase the utility of the finished product. In contrast to topographic maps, i. e., representations of natural and man-made features on the surface of the earth, thematic maps concentrate on displaying the geographical occurrence and varia tion of a single phenomenon - the "theme" of the map. The link between thematic and base mapping is rather strong as the themat ic information to be depicted is of greater value if displayed on an accurate base map. Further, the thematic map generally uses statis tical data which are frequently related to internal administrative boundaries for enumeration. The major reason for constructing a thematic map is to discover the spatial structure of the theme of the map and to then relate the structure to some aspects of the under lying environment.

Heyman, ed., Stockholm). Since this work appeared, the idea of visual representation of the anatomical ex tent of malignant tumours at the different stages of their develop ment has been repeatedly discussed. At its meeting in Copenhagen in July 1954, the DICC adopted as part of its programme "the realization of a clinical atlas". How ever, the time to do the planned book of illustrations was not ripe until the national committees and international organizations had officially recognized the 28 classifications of malignant tu mours at various sites as presented in the third edition of the TNM Booklet edited by M. Harmer (TNM Classification of Malig nant Tumours, 1978). This was all the more important since publi cation of the Booklet was followed in 1980 by publication of a Brochure of Checklists, edited by A.H.
