The contributors to this volume describe such contestations and circumventions of health ideologies, and the blurring of therapeutic boundaries, on the basis of case studies from India, the South Asian Diaspora, and Europe, focusing on relations between body, mind, and spirit in a variety of situations. The result is not always the "live and let live" medical pluralism that is described in the literature.

So wird am Beispiel von Interviews mit interkulturellen Paaren - genauer: englische Muttersprachler/innen, die mit deutschsprachigen Schweizer/innen verheiratet sind, in einer diglossen Sprachregion in der Zentralschweiz leben und über drei Jahre interviewt wurden - die Verhandlung und Performanz hybrider Identitäten analysiert und gezeigt, wie "doing Swiss" diskursiv ko-konstruiert und ausgehandelt wird. This book presents an empirical study that examines intercultural couples' reasons for specific language practices and investigates the negotiation and performances of hybrid identities within the marital unit, the most intimate community of practice (CofP). The theoretical framework adopted draws on the sociocultural linguistic approach to identity and the social psychological theory of positioning. The data stem from ethnographic observation and recordings carried out over a three-year period with intercultural couples, namely Anglophones married to native German-speaking Swiss, who reside in central Switzerland, where a diglossic situation prevails. The positionings individuals take up or refute indicate that the performance of "doing Swiss" is not only discursively co-constructed, but a site where the negotiation of meaning emerges within the context of social interaction.

The book focuses on the interaction of persons with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ASD is a neurobiological developmental disorder, characterized by problems with social interaction, over-sensitivity to sensory stimuli and restricted interest (APA 2013). Problems with social interaction being a core feature of ASD, there is a scientific and a societal need for a book focusing on this topic. The book approaches the interaction of persons with ASD from a new angle. Firstly, where most studies on ASD are based on data coming from experimental settings, this book is based on naturally occurring data coming from group therapy sessions where 11–13-year-old Finnish- and French-speaking boys with ASD talk with each other and with their therapists. Secondly, the book treats a variety of themes that have so far been studied much less than, for example, the pragmatic problems of persons with ASD. These themes include the following aspects: speech prosody (characteristic features, perception of atypicality by neurotypical listeners), disfluencies of speech (comparison with neurotypical controls), comprehension problems (role of prosody, role of disfluencies, other causes), gaze behavior (eye contact avoidance strategies, using gaze as a source of feedback) as well as therapists’ response strategies and teaching orientations. People concerned with the history of education and the history of labor rights bring two premises to the table. First, that the history of education unfolds separately from the history of working class movements, and, second, that an historical period 400 years old is securely confined by the past. Surely the time known as Tudor England, most readers would say, rests in peace as a bygone era? Surely an educational system devised by scholars differs from an economic system operated by large landholders and manorial lords? This book challenges both premises. The Tudor educational system regarded their select class of boys as human capital to be endowed with royalist values, germane to the ruling elite. The notion of students as co-partners in curriculum-making was unthinkable. Mirroring this educational system was a labor system that regarded commoners as dependent economic actors, virtual pawns in capitalist strategy. Tudor laborers were granted the right to work, but had no say in formulating economic policies that affected the core of their working lives. Describing the mirroring relation of two marginalized and voiceless groups, this book confronts the regrettable historical conditions of students, teachers, and workers in a celebrated cultural past: Tudor England. This marginalization of working class and student labor is not a relic from the Tudor past. The political and socioeconomic structures that kept students, teachers and workers from negotiating their own destiny are still active in the 21st century. This text explores the struggle of students, teachers and workers with the Tudor legacies of education and labor. After tracing these transhistorical connections, each essay calls for activism, resistance or reform. Democracy—as Benjamin Franklin explained in the allegory of two wolves and a lamb deciding what to have for lunch—has always called for organized resistance from below. Pursuing that hopeful goal, this book outlines new forms of education and labor strategies. If these are put into practice, the needs, voices, and beliefs of students, teachers, and workers may be recognized and honored by elite leadership.
