This book provides a lively and unique approach to beginning to make sense of the starry heavens without losing that sense of wonder about it all. The author pushes the imaginative capacities of the reader to "see" the earth from the perspective of the stars and to see the stars from the perspective of the entire globe of the earth. It is possible to travel back and forth from each point of view in breathtaking clarity of imaginative visioning. This adds a new dimension to the study of the stars. This is a book small and easy to read in the brief number of pages but enormous in its scope of encouraging effective study of the mysterious heavens! The book is as brilliant as the objects of its study.

Book Description
Compiled by a team of experts, this textbook has been designed for elementary university courses in astronomy and astrophysics. It starts with a detailed discussion of our nearest star, the Sun, and describes how solar physicists have come to understand its internal workings. It then considers how astronomers go about studying the basic physical properties and life-cycles of more distant stars, and culminates with a discussion of the formation of exotic objects such as neutron stars and black holes. Written in an accessible style that avoids complex mathematics, and illustrated in colour throughout, this book is suitable for self-study and will appeal to amateur astronomers as well as undergraduate students. It contains numerous helpful learning features such as boxed summaries, student exercises with full solutions, and a glossary of terms. The book is also supported by a website hosting further teaching materials.

Book Description
Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Variable Stars During the past few years the subject of variable stars has become increasingly interesting to the amateur who is the owner of a telescope, as well as to the average college student who has some knowledge of astronomy, while to the research worker it offers many line of investigation which are full of promise. However, so complex is the subject, and so diverse the principles involved in a complete understanding of it, that extensive reading in several different directions is required as a foundation. It is with the purpose of supplying this need as well as of making an important and attractive branch of astronomy accessible to the student that the present volume has been prepared. It is the outcome of several years of teaching the subject in Vassar College, for which the material was primarily collected. This material is scattered throughout various periodicals in the form either of research papers or quite popular articles, intended to give directions for observation to owners of small telescopes. A large amount of historical matter is also included, which is taken from sources not within easy reach of the general reader. Mention may be made of some of the subjects treated, which are introductory to the study of stellar variation, such as the study of the Durchmusterung charts, photometry in all its branches, spectroscopy, and star color. The purpose of the present volume is to consider all of these points, and in particular to give in as simple and clear a form as possible a full presentation of the physical principles upon which many of the instruments and methods of investigation are based, principles such as those of polarized light, spectrum analysis, the formation of the photographic image, and photo-electricity. Book Description
How do astronomers know what they know about the stars and planets? That is the question behind today's rapid pace of cosmic discovery, for every new finding rests upon a centuries-long foundation of astronomical practice. Introduction to Stars and Planets: An activities-based exploration reveals the methods by which Earthbound observers have deduced the physical attributes of celestial bodies, whether situated within our solar neighborhood or at the far ends of the galaxy. The book's 28 mildly mathematical activities invite readers to carry out the essential work of the astronomer by utilizing real observational data sets and high-quality celestial photographs to establish the innate properties of a range of cosmic systems. Taken in sequence, these activities illustrate the epic advancement of stellar and planetary astronomy over the past century, up to the present day. Key Features Wide-ranging topical coverage of both historical and up-to-the-minute aspects of astronomical discovery Uses a learning-by-doing approach Structured, goal-oriented framework centered on the methods and physical principles by which astronomers study the universe Provides real-time educational feedback to students Introduces elementary mathematics for students to gain a truer sense of the work astronomers do

Book Description
Guiding the reader through all the stages that lead to the formation of a star such as our Sun, this advanced textbook provides students with a complete overview of star formation. It examines the underlying physical processes that govern the evolution from a molecular cloud core to a main-sequence star, and focuses on the formation of solar-mass stars. Each chapter combines theory and observation, helping readers to connect with and understand the theory behind star formation. Beginning with an explanation of the interstellar medium and molecular clouds as sites of star formation, subsequent chapters address the building of typical stars and the formation of high-mass stars, concluding with a discussion of the by-products and consequences of star formation. This is a unique, self-contained text with sufficient background information for self-study, and is ideal for students and professional researchers alike.
