Excerpt from American Journal of Diseases of Children In 1885 Richet,3 in describing his calorimeter, states that he has two chambers, one Of which, having a capacity Of about liters Of air, is used for experiments with infants. He cites an experiment with an infant Of 9 kg, who was in the chamber for one hour and ten minutes, and gives protocols for another experiment, one hour in length, presumably with the same infant. In summing up his averages he refers to numerous experiments on infants weighing from 6 to 9 kg, and includes Observations made with environmental temperatures rang ing from 18 C. To 25 C. He concludes that the infant produces on the average 4 calories per kilogram of body - weight per hour. Let me quote a few of them; Experiment III. - Irritation of the brachial plexus caused first, a rise in blood-pressure, followed, after continued severe irritation, by a marked and persistent fall. Autopsy showed the heart and arteries empty and the veins full. Experiment IV. - Crushing the feet caused a great rise in blood pressure. Tearing the brachial plexus and crushing the testes caused a great fall in pressure. Experiment V. - Violence to the feet and brachial plexus caused fluctuating pressure; then opening the abdomen caused a marked fall. Which continued. Autopsy; left ventricle empty, in systole; right ventricle contained some blood. The veins were full, the splanchnic no more SO than the somatic.
