It was found that alfalfa would grow very well there, and the lands were wanted by men owning large cattle ranches (pl. II) in the Province Of Buenos Aires, where they could not afford to fatten their steers. They wanted cheap alfalfa lands to which they could send their young steers to fatten and on which they could breed others. After Argentina, it leads the countries of the Western Hemisphere in exports of beef and veal, even though with Argentina it tends to take either first or second rank among all countries each year in per capita consumption. When this meat enters the list of u.s. Imports, it does so in canned beef form. Uruguay's beef and veal exports have risen faster than production, the former nearly doubling by 1965 over the 5-year average level for 195 6-60, the latter increasing by a little over one-third. Uruguay usually ranks second only to Argentina among Western Hemisphere suppliers of wool in world trade, with the United States and the United Kingdom principal markets. Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture Circular: July 24, 1957 Pastures.-pastures, which cover large acreage, have a special importance in Argentina because cattle and sheep raising are almost exclusively graz ing industries. As a rule, steers are fattened on pastures, and only in cases of extreme drought are they fed corn. Pasture quality in the various areas directly determines the number, kind, and quality of livestock. Alfalfa does especially well in the major part of the main cereal and live stock zone and provides fine pasturage for the fattening of steers, On the southeastern side of Buenos Aires Province, alfalfa does not do well; natural gasses, however, provide good pasture land for cattle and sheep breeding. Sheep grazing is well established in Patagonia, a dry region where pastures are poor in the south but better in the northeast.
