Excerpt from Aids in Practical Geology While the size of the book has not been increased in this edition, alterations have been made in more than one hundred places, whereby, it is hoped, the fairly wide subject-matter has been brought up to date or more adequately set before the reader. The book has always aimed at aiding those who enquire into the materials and history of the earth's crust, for purposes of research or for any special enterprise. At the same time, the student is not likely to forget that practical geology is fundamentally to be followed in the open country and the open air, and that these "Aids" are intended to help towards the determination of what has been personally gathered from the mountain-side or in the plain. For those who take pleasure in learning from the earth around them, a smaller volume has been written, "Open-Air Studios in Geology," in which special appeal is made to the rock-masses as we meet them in the field. But all the wide developments of geology must rest on patient determinative work; and the invention of a new piece of apparatus for the laboratory, or the correct appreciation of a fossil, may open up the clue to some long-sought secret of the earth. While certain modern restrictions in nomenclature have been introduced, which undoubtedly tend towards exactitude, the limits of the names of rocks and fossil genera have been kept as wide as possible. The method he followed was to procure the sheets of the Geological Survey maps for any district to be studied over or even passed through, and to cut them into small squares and paste them on the leaves of notebooks. With these in his pocket, he has worked over hundreds of farms in various parts of the United Kingdom, watched and noted the various kinds of farming passed on railway journeys or on drives, and collected samples of soil for examination where the maps indicated typical surface deposits. All the information so gathered has been sifted and arranged in the light of his own lifelong practical experience. Excerpt from Address Delivered at the Meeting of the Association of American Geologists and Naturalists, Held in Washington, May, 1844 Prof. Frederick Hall possessed great ardor in the pursuit of knowl edge, and was one of the earliest cultivators in this country of geology and mineralogy. He was educated at Dartmouth College, became pro feasor of natural philosophy and chemistry in Middlebury College, and afterwards president of Mount Hope College in Maryland, and at the time of his death (which took place at Peoria, Ill.) was professor of chemistry in the medical department of Columbia College, Washington. Of a generous and enthusiastic nature, he manifested the sincerity of his zeal for science and the cause of education, by the very handsome contribution in money and a rich cabinet, which he made a few years ago in aid of the establishment of a new professorship in the respected institution from which he imbibed his strong love for learning. Though not a practical geologist, he was a successful teacher of the science, evinced a lively interest in its advancement, and earnestly encouraged this our present effort to promote its progress in our country. Mr. Nicollet was born in Savoy between Geneva and Mont Blanc. Repairing to Paris about the age of twenty, he applied himself with great enthusiasm to improve, through the resources of that capital, the defects of his early education, and gifted with a fine mathematical ability, and enjoying the lessons and friendship of Laplace, he soon rose to distino tion as a mathematician and astronomer. Excerpt from The Geological History of the Connecticut Valley of Massachusetts: A Popular Account of Its Rocks and OriginThe purpose of this little book is to present, in popular form, the salient points in the geological history of the Connecticut Valley of Massachusetts. The beautiful valley and its charming boundary hills may in truth be said to be a geologist's paradise. In regard to variety of geological phenomena, few districts of equal size in North America surpass it. To most of its residents the marvelous story of the Connecticut Valley and adjacent hills as recorded in nature's book of the rocks is unknown. Beginning with the oldest decipherable records and leading up to the present time, it is my pleasure, in the following pages, to explain to the layman the principal known events in the wonderful geological history of the Connecticut Valley, including the origin of the valley as we see it today.The use of technical and unusual terms has been reduced to a minimum compatible with a reasonable understanding of the subject. Each of the few technical terms is explained where first used in the text.Since so many of the great principles of earth science (geology) are wonderfully illustrated in the Connecticut Valley and the adjacent highlands, it is my hope that this book may furnish the basis and inspiration to many people of the region for understanding and interpreting not only the principal records of the rocks, but also the important processes and laws of the science of geology illustrated by these records. To aid in the accomplishment of this purpose, simplified, largely nontechnical, scientific discussions are entered into. In order to make the conclusions more impressive and realistic actual easily accessible localities, carefully selected out of my field experience, are cited to illustrate each stage in the tremendously long history of the region. I am not satisfied to say to the reader, for example, long ages ago, according to geologists, the sea spread over central western Massachusetts.
