Book Description
Excerpt from Advanced English Composition The teacher's main duty is to set work, to appraise it, and criticise it. The actual amount of oral teaching to be done is very small. The chief work is the correction of essays. 1. Setting the Essay. - (1) State the subject, or subjects. It is not necessary that all should write on the same subject. In the case of Technical essays it is impossible, for the number of reference books is small. There should be a fixed list of technical essay subjects. All should write on each subject; but not all in the same week. It is a good thing to draw up a programme. Copying is so easily detected here that it is not worth attempting. When the whole of a subject cannot be worked out in one period, plus its evening's preparation, two periods may be given. But it is better to divide up the subject into sections, e.g. 1st period, drawing up of notes; 2nd, writing first scene; 3rd, writing second scene (in the case of a story); first part, etc. (in the case of an essay). A single essay subject may take a fortnight for the boys to write. 2. Explaining the Treatment. - This should be very brief and very practical. Book Description
Excerpt from Advanced English Grammar Through Composition The fact that most of those who will use this book will probably be studying one or more foreign languages, has caused more than usual attention to be paid to the points of most importance for that work, such as the Prepositions, the Cases, the Subjunctive Mood, and Clause constructions and their equivalents. The subject of Prosody has also been treated in considerable detail, as the author has found by experience that practically all pupils can attain considerable facility in versifying, and that such exercises are most useful for gaining command over language and for training the taste of the pupils at an age when paraphrasing, etc, are beginning to be outgrown. For this, however, some thing much more thorough than the usual treatment Of Prosody in Grammars is necessary, and this the author has endeavoured to supply. The Historical Sketch of the English Language contains sufficient anglo-saxon and Chaucerian grammar to serve as reference for the explanations of grammatical forms throughout the book; and the account of the Vocabulary and of Word Building will, it is hoped, be found sufficient and self-contained. A chapter on Figures of Speech has also been added, so that information and practice on all the subjects usually included under English Grammar may be found in a single text-book. Book Description
Excerpt from A Practical Course in English Composition Reading up beforehand is by no means advised in every case. And yet there seems to be little warrant for the objections to this practice sometimes advanced of late. The early work of nearly every great writer shows clearly that he began by' conscious, if not deliber ate, imitation. Still, it will be apparent from even a hasty glance into this book that style is not considered the all-important thing it is the subject-matter of models and references that has in most cases led to their selection, even translations being admitted. After all else is done, one thing remains for the teacher the criticism of the pupil's work.' There fore, mechanical faults and minor individual vices of style are not discussed herein. They are as numerous and as diverse as are the individual writers. Often, too, they are not matters of absolute right or wrong. Many adventitious considerations, which cannot be foreseen here, must go to settle the question. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
