Book Description
Significantly revised and updated, the new second edition updates the science on neonatal encephalopathy presented in the 1st edition. The new 2nd edition recommends a broad evaluation of all potential contributing factors in every case of neonatal encephalopathy, including maternal medical history, obstetric and intrapartum factors, and placental pathology. This recommendation is a shift from the 2003 report, which focused on determining whether or not a hypoxic-ischemic event was the cause of neonatal encephalopathy. Includes new sections on - Placental pathology - Focal ischemic stroke - Neonatal interventions - Patient safety - Significant advances in neuroimaging This report will assist the clinician in evaluating a newborn with encephalopathy to assist in defining both the cause and timing.

Book Description
Improvements in the detection of fetal and neonatal brain injuries, advances in our understanding of the pathophysiology, cellular and molecular bases of encephalopathy, and new treatment options have all combined to produce significant changes in the management of neonatal brain disorders in the past few years. This new edition of Fetal and Neonatal Brain Injury brings the reader fully up to date with all advances in clinical management and outcome assessment. Updated material includes inflammation focusing in particular on chorioamnionitis and fetal brain injury; genetic brain injury; and expanded sections on cholestasis, diabetes, and thyroid disease. An updated, highly illustrated chapter on structural and functional imaging of the fetal and neonatal brain is also included. An outstanding international team of highly experienced neonatologists and maternal-fetal medicine clinicians have produced a practical, authoritative clinical text that gives clear management advice to all clinicians involved in the treatment of these patients.

Book Description
The increasing prevalence of preterm birth in the United States is a complex public health problem that requires multifaceted solutions. Preterm birth is a cluster of problems with a set of overlapping factors of influence. Its causes may include individual-level behavioral and psychosocial factors, sociodemographic and neighborhood characteristics, environmental exposure, medical conditions, infertility treatments, and biological factors. Many of these factors co-occur, particularly in those who are socioeconomically disadvantaged or who are members of racial and ethnic minority groups. While advances in perinatal and neonatal care have improved survival for preterm infants, those infants who do survive have a greater risk than infants born at term for developmental disabilities, health problems, and poor growth. The birth of a preterm infant can also bring considerable emotional and economic costs to families and have implications for public-sector services, such as health insurance, educational, and other social support systems. Preterm Birth assesses the problem with respect to both its causes and outcomes. This book addresses the need for research involving clinical, basic, behavioral, and social science disciplines. By defining and addressing the health and economic consequences of premature birth, this book will be of particular interest to health care professionals, public health officials, policy makers, professional associations and clinical, basic, behavioral, and social science researchers.

Book Description
Obstetricians and pediatricians in daily practice will find here the answersand explanations they need concerning the major problem of perinatal asphyxia. Leading experts in pediatrics, obstetrics and neurophysiology havecome together to produce a single sourcebook covering all aspects of thesubject. Biochemical mechanisms and clinical aspects of perinatal asphyxia, fetal and neonatal assessment, and perinatal management are thoroughly discussed. Neurodevelopmental outcome is another important issue addressed. In light of newer technologies, the prognosis of infants suffering from asphyxia is examined. Many figures and typicalcases are provided, making the book easy to use and providing quick access to solutions. The reader can easily identify a problem in the fetus and its subsequent development. With such knowledge, the improved managementof perinatal asphyxia is made possible.
