Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on the Medical and Surgical Diseases of Women History renders it certain that the Egyptians studied upon medical subjects, but with our present knowledge of the records left from that age of the world, we have no data from which to estimate the extent or accuracy of their knowledge. Nor are we able, with our acquaintance with Hebrew literature, to determine that any considerable amount of knowledge pertaining to this especial class of diseases was at that time in existence. With the advent of Hippocrates, 400 B. There seems to have been a revival of all that pertains to medical sub jects, and he especially seems to have made a careful study of the subject from actual dissections of the human body, and so far as our present information extends, he was the first to treat of the diseases of women in a methodical man ner. Precisely how much advancement was made during the next thousand years, it is only possible to surmise by the incidental cropping out of information in the extant writings of that day, that a uterine sound and specula were used, two inventions, or reproductions of very modern date.14 introduction. From the ruins of Pompeii was exhumed a bivalve speculum, an instrument only generally known in later times, after its introduction by Recamier in 1801, although alluded to as early as 1640 by Ambrose Pare. Book Description
Excerpt from A Text-Book on the Practice of Gynecology: For Practitioners and Students I have considered fully both the medical and surgical aspects of gynecology, and have discussed each subject so far as possible upon the basis of my own experience. If a multiplicity of methods or operations is given for the treatment of a disease, the results must be unsatisfactory, as such a description is at best incomplete or fragmentary in character and leaves the reader with an imperfect conception of the subject. I have therefore in each instance given that which in my judgment is the best plan of treatment, and afterward described such variations as may be required in the management of atypical cases. In follow ing this plan it has been necessary to exclude certain operations and methods of treatment employed by other surgeons, and I do not wish to be misunderstood as implying that they have no value, as I have been guided solely by the desire to present a treatise which shall give a thoroughly detailed account of the practice of gynecology from the standpoint of the general practitioner and the student of medicine. The book is unusually large for a work on gynecology, but it was impossible to lessen the number of pages and at the same time give the necessary technic details and space for the large number of illustrations. Book Description
Few specialties have a longer or richer eponymous background than obstetrics and gynaecology. Eponyms add a human side to an increasingly technical profession and represent the historic tradition and language of the speciality. This collection aims to perpetuate the names and contributions of pioneers and offer introductory profiles to the founders in whose steps we follow. This third edition includes 26 new entries, as well as expanded detail, illustration and quotation for existing entries. Biographical data and historical and medical context are discussed for each of the 391 names, with reference to 34 countries, reflecting the field's far reaching origins. More than 1700 original references feature, alongside an extensive bibliography of more than 2500 linked references to assist readers searching for more detailed information. This is a volume for physicians, midwives, medical historians, medical ethicists and all those interested in the history and evolution of obstetrical and gynaecological treatment.
