Book Description
Excerpt from A Short History of England, and the British Empire A narrative that takes into account. The expansion of England into Greater Britain necessarily carries the author far afield. To compress the story into a small manual like the present means that the topics to be discussed must be carefully chosen and a mass of interesting and even important materials must be excluded. The type of text-book that attempts to tell the story of national development with a fulness of detail is the despair of the teacher of history: the facts come in such throngs that very few of them are able to make any lastingimpression. The author has striven to avoid this by including such facts only as have seriously affected the course of English history or have definitely contributed to the building of the British Empire. It'is, of course, true that the demands of the narrative have frequently interfered with the con sistent application of this rule, but in the main it has been followed. Book Description
Excerpt from A Short History of England, From the Earliest Times to the Present Day The aim of this History of England is to give a short narrative of the growth of the British Empire and Constitution from the earliest times to the present day, in such a form and within such limits as shall supply the wants of middle and upper forms at schools, candidates for university and civil service examinations, and for the army and navy, pupil and assistant teachers at elementary schools, and students in training colleges, and also shall give a clear and intelligible account of those events and institutions a knowledge of which is so much needed by the student of modern political life. To attain all these ends within the space of 450 pages has been a most difficult task, and a rigid censorship has been needed, both in choosing the subjects and events to be mentioned, and in allotting an appropriate space to each. In deciding what subjects to admit, I have had with great regret to omit all references to the manners and customs of the people, except where they have borne directly upon political events; on the other hand, greater space has been given to the working of economic causes than has been usual in a book of this size. Book Description
Excerpt from A Short History of England The aim of the book 1s to be instructive as well as interest ing. In it I have tried to tell a clear and simple story, avoid ing technical expressions, and yet passing over no important features of the history that are necessary for the proper under standing of the subject. The narrative is made as continuous as possible, that the reader may follow in unbroken sequence the thread of the story. It is accompanied with a large num ber of newly selected illustrations, and an ample supply of maps and chronological tables. The elaborate bibliographies contained in the larger work have been omitted, and only a brief but selective list of the best books of moderate length has been retained. The' history has been brought down to date ln matters of schcla-fsh'rp as well as chronology, and con tains many opinions and statements not to be found in the larger work. Book Description
Excerpt from A Short History of the Expansion of the British Empire: 1500, 1870 This History is not a 'Manual, ' i.e., a digest of the general body of facts relative to Colonial history. Events have been dwelt upon, or passed over, as they serve, or do not serve, to illustrate the broad underlying principles which from time to time governed British Expansion. A manual of information makes a bad text-book for a student. For the right kind of text-book should aim at something beyond storing the mind with facts: viz., at stimulating the reader to further enquiry, and at guiding him in the classification of his material and in framing conclusions about it History-teaching is barren if this threefold result has not been attained. Further, the mental discipline which History affords may be better derived from the earlier rather than the later epochs; in our subject, from the period of struggle and experiment rather than the age of full achievement and fruition. The story of the American Colonies, though we lost them, is in this way more instructive than the orderly progress of Australia. For real insight into motives and forces the Elizabethan time, perhaps, has merits which the Victorian age lacks. Hence I have refrained of set purpose from bringing down the narrative to the present day. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Short History of England, and the British Empire In this volume an attempt has been made to trace the growth of the English nation from its faint and unpromising beginnings in the early middle ages to the opening years of the twentieth century. During this period the little kingdom of the West Saxons has developed into an empire, the most extensive and the most diverse in all history. A subject of such dimensions may be viewed from many different angles; in this case the writer has tried to discuss it from the view point of his American readers. Certain important periods of English history are in a very real sense our own history: the beginnings of the American Republic were also the beginnings of the British Empire; and our country is still a part of the great empire of English culture. That the United States has inherited much of its constitutional system from Great Britain is a fact that needs no emphasis; but even greater is our English inheritance in the fields of literature, religion, ideals, and general culture. In the building of American civilization we have drawn materials from nearly all the cultivated peoples of the world; but the greatest single element in our culture is still the English. With the English language we have inherited the treasures of English thought. The non-conformist churches, for example, had their origin in the storm and stress of the Puritan Revolution, but in no other country have they taken root and developed strength as in the United States. It is therefore believed that a study of English history from a view point that is not too narrowly British cannot fail to give a deeper insight into the development of American life and thought and civilization. At the same time an effort has been made to give prominence to those facts of English history that lie at the root of our own social and political development.
