Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on the Diseases of Women Under these conditions I accepted the task, and have endeavored scrupulously to carry out the terms of the agreement. Individual experiences or differing opinions have been included in brackets and signed T. G. T. Or P. F. M. As the case may be. All additions and alterations in this revision were without exception made by me, and I hold myself solely responsible for them. Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on the Diseases of Women: Prepared With Special Reference to the Wants of the General Practitioner and Advanced Student If I have, on the whole, given such sound, practical, and fairly judicial advice as will enable a few of the rising generation of practitioners to escape the errors and avoid the difficulties of my own early career, I shall be more than compensated for any labour involved in the task. Book Description
Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on the Diseases Peculiar to Women: Illustrated by Cases, Derived From Hospital and Private Practice IT is now more than twenty years since my attention was particularly directed to the important branch of Medical Science which constitutes the subject of the following pages. During a great part of this period, Guy's Hospital, with its extensive Lying-in Charity, and my own private and consultation practice in fe male diseases, have afforded me opportunities falling to the lot of few practitioners. I do not, however, on this account urge any exclusive claim to the publi cation of a work of this kind, nor do I ask for its opi nions and practice any exclusive or undue deference; but I trust the truth of the principles, and the treat ment recommended in the book, will obtain for it the sanction and confidence of my professional brethren. The disposition to publish has been strengthened by an Opinion I have long entertained, that practitioners, who hold important public appointments, are bound, so far as their sources of authentic information can be made subservient, to improve and increase the com mon stock of professional knowledge. It may, too, be urged in favour of my attempt, that some production of the kind is really wanted; for, while we possess many valuable individual essays on female diseases, there are few complete and practical works.vfii preface. Book Description
Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on the Diseases of Women: Illustrated by Colored Plates and Numerous Wood Engravings On examination Of the numerous Allopathic works on this subject, I found that the pathology Of uterine disease had been carefully and successfully studied, and that, in this respect, this branch of medical science was at least equal, if not in advance Of the general practice Of medicine: and yet, with this accurate knowledge Of the nature and character Of the diseased actions, their treatment was far less success ful than our own, so far as medicinal agents were used for the cure, but where Operative interference was required, nothing more could be desired than was given in these works. From this investigation, commenced for my. Own benefit, the present work has grown. For the description and pathological character Of the diseases described in the following pages, I am principally indebted to Old-school authorities; but the practice is strictly 'eclectic, ' every measure recommended having been fully tested by myself, or by our most successful Eclectic practitioners. Book Description
Excerpt from The Change of Life in Health and Disease: A Practical Treatise on the Nervous and Other Affections Incidental to Women at the Decline of Life Gynaecology, or the accurate study of diseases of women, is the youngest branch of medical literature, for it began in 1816, with Recamier and the better means of diagnosis that he introduced. The time that has elapsed since then, may be divided into two periods, the first extends from Recamier to Simpson, the second we are still in the midst of, and it dates from our illustrious countryman. The galaxy of Paris physicians who followed the lead of Recamier, had for object, to bring the sexual organs of women within the range of the general laws of pathology. Velpeau, it is true, taught the frequency and importance of uterine malformations and displacements, but inflammation was accepted as explaining most uterine diseases, and the therapeutical tendencies of this epoch were essentially medical without disparagement of surgery. Such was also the tendency of Dr. Henry Bennet's work, when in 1844, he made known to the profession in England what had been done in France. With Simpson began the more exclusive surgical tendencies that are still in the ascendant in England and America. He started the treatment of uterine displacements and flexions by pessaries, intra, and extra uterine, and while mature pathologists still hope to find a pessary, that can support and rectify the womb, without damaging it, every young gynaecologist has a pet pessary of his own, that no one else believes in. At one metropolitan school, the students are taught, that most diseases of women are caused by some twist or displacement of the womb and that a pessary is the keystone of uterine therapeutics.
