Book Description
In the past, Luton was a market town and, for many years, was also a centre for the brewing industry. In the 19th century it became famous for hat making, and more recently it has grown into a thriving industrial centre. During the Second World War it played an important part in the manufacture of army vehicles, and children bound for school had to dodge the Churchill tanks on their way to various theatres of conflict. Nowadays, Luton Airport is the gateway for all types of traveller and the town is well known for its famous football team. Luton has always provided visitors with a warm welcome and many have stayed and made the town their home. Local industry offered employment opportunities in the early 20th century and many had cause to be grateful for its relative prosperity during the Great Depression. Following the Second World War, immigrants from the Indian subcontinent and from the West Indies brought with them colourful new cultures that are celebrated in the annual Carnival. This fascinating and illustrated account of Luton's past will inform and delight anyone who lives in the town and inspire those who grew up here.

Book Description
Excerpt from The History of Luton: With Its Hamlets, Etc The History of Luton has, hitherto, been merely fragmentary, descending scarcely to the middle of the eighteenth century, and confined almost exclusively to matters connected, with the Church; but the Neighbourhood possessing many relics of antiquity, and the Town itself having risen, within the last few years, to a prominent position in the Commercial world, the Author felt induced to believe that a collection of facts, relating to both, presented in a connected form, would not be unacceptable to the public. With this view, he has spared no pains in consulting every available record of former ages, or in col lecting every interesting event of later date. The present History is the fruit of his exertions; and he feels stimulated by the hope, and im pressed with the conviction, that it will be found more complete, comprehensive, and satisfactory, than anything that has yet been written upon the subject. Book Description
Set in medieval, Tudor and Stuart England, we discover how the family became involved with the secretive Knights Templar and then spread around the country. There were great landowners associated with Kings and Queens. Some were persecuted, arrested, imprisoned, tortured and suffered horrific executions. One followed the Mayflower to New England only to fall victim to native Indians. We find wonderful cases of jury fixing, insurrection, Lollardry, murder and false imprisonment. There were clandestine meetings, hidden treasures, forfeiture of lands, and piracy against the Spanish. There was a murderous monk who became personal servant to the King; a Lady-in-Waiting to the Queen, who was also the King's mistress; a designer of Warships and co-founder of the Royal Society. We have Lords of the Manor, Elizabethan Actors who knew Shakespeare and even a martyred Saint. These extraordinary tales of our ancestors' lives make this book compelling reading.
