Book Description
Excerpt from A Dictionary of Terms Used in Printing A printed page, an engraving, or a bank note may be exactly copied by this invention. Moisten the printed paper with dilute phosphoric acid, lay it face downwards on a clean sheet of Zinc, and put it in a press for a short time. The acid of the unprinted part etches the zinc beneath, while the printed part sets off on the zinc, and thus produces a reverse copy of the printing. Wash the plate with an acid solution of gum, and it will be ready for use. The plate may now be treated as the stone in Lithographic Printing first damped, and then rolled. The affinity of the ink to the letters already set off on the plate, and the repulsion of the other parts of the plate, cause the lines of the device to take the ink, but the other parts remain clean, the printing then follows. Book Description
Excerpt from American Dictionary of Printing and Bookmaking: Containing a History of These Arts in Europe and America, With Definitions of Technical Terms and Biographical Sketches Much space has been given to historical and biographical matter. Begin ning with the invention of the art, the changes and improvements in each line down to the present day have been told. Part of this is given under countries and cities; part under machines or new processes; but a very large part under biographical not-ices. The latter have been illustrated wherever practicable. The biographies of people who have lived or are now living in the United States are particularly numerous. They include the officers of the Typothetae and the presidents of the International Union, besides the most prominent inventors, type-founders and printing-machine makers, with a multitude of others who have attained distinction in some one of the arts. Not one has been inserted for personal reasons. When the plan of this dictionary was submitted by W. W. Pasko to the late Howard Lockwood it was considered by the latter for a long time. This was his custom. He decided no important question in haste. Nothing was said for years, but when the firm finally decided to enter upon its publication it was warmly taken up. An agreement was made with Mr. Pasko to prepare the work and carry it to completion within four years. Mr. Lockwood scrutinized all of the proofs, and entered into all details with great interest. When, in October, 1892, it reached the letter L he was urged to allow a sketch of himself to be prepared and used. He shrunk from this, with the modesty inherent in his nature, but finally consented. A brief notice was made ready and given to him, that it might be revised as to dates and names. He did not return it. Presently all the type in the font was set up, leaving a gap under Lo. Work ceased. Thus it stood when his sudden death came. The bit of copy which had not been returned was never found; the article about him now in the book was afterwards written, and the work proceeded. Much obligation must be expressed to Theodore Low De Vinne, the great printer, for his kindly assistance, his indication of authorities, his decision of knotty quest-ions, his loan of illustrations, and his permission to borrow freely from his two principal books, the Invention of Printing and the Printers' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Books That Count: A Dictionary of Useful Books IN preparing a second edition of this work, the first large edition having been exhausted, I have striven to make it, even more than formerly, a reliable guide to those books which treat their subjects on broad lines, and in point of knowledge, research, and reflection approximate to standard value. While the principles that underlay the compilation of the original work have been strictly adhered to, I have not been unmindful that a colossal war has changed the face of the world, and made all things new. That fact alone has made the task one of abnormal difficulty. Many of the pre-war books no longer suffice, others that still keep their place are out of print, while it is only within the last eighteen months that the books requisite to the new age have begun to appear. Further, the situation was rendered more com plicated by a serious crisis, or rather a succession of crises, in the printing trade which increased the cost of production to such an extent that the editorial work for a considerable period had to be entirely suspended. If, therefore, this new edition of Books That Count is not without blemishes (and I am fully conscious of them), it ought to be remembered that they are largely attributable to the extraordinary conditions under which the work was prepared. Book Description
Excerpt from An Etymological Dictionary of the English Language Owing to the large number of corrections which the use of the newer method renders imperative, I took the opportunity, in 1901, of printing an entirely new edition of my Concise Etymological Dictionary, first issued in 1882, and partially corrected in four later editions the result being that the edition of 1901 entirely supersedes all that preceded it.
