Book Description
“A rich and compelling collection that will make a significant contribution to the study of Jamaican/West Indian/black folklore and culture” –Daryl Cumber Dance, Virginia Commonwealth University “A fantastic collection from the rich storehouse of Jamaican traditional oral literature” –Rex Nettleford, University of the West Indies, Kingston, Jamaica “A Wealth of Information…. The author carries the presentation of the proverbs/sayings to the level of socio-anthropological significance” –E. Valerie Smith, Florida A&M University In 1992, Jamaicans throughout the world celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of Jamaica’s formal independence from Britain this collection of Creole sayings contributes to the lively interest in cultural preservation which exists this year in anticipation of the event. The sayings, an archive of the wit and wisdom of many generations, aim to trigger reflection and thought. They are never fully explained, and, says the author, “in the most extreme situation one might well need an entire week to ponder and think seriously” about their meaning. They exert pressure to conform to community standards, and they influence conduct in much the same way as religion does. Strong in imagery and often poetic, the maxims draw upon a variety of well-known flora, fauna, and real or imaginary creatures the anansi, for example, famous for “playin’ de fool fe ketch wise” (playing foolish in order to catch the wise), is regarded as a favorite hero in folklore. Creole, initially constructed as a coded language, employs a number of West African linguistic traditions. These Creole sayings, a valuable addition to the literature and ethnography of the Caribbean region, link Jamaican culture to its African past. They offer delightful reading to Latin American scholars, to students of comparative sociology and anthropology, and to the general public. G. Llewellyn Watson is professor of sociology at the University of Prince Edward Island, Charlottetowwn, Canada.

Book Description
Proverbs are the means by which older generations pass on the fruits of their experience to their children. Every culture or society develops its own unique body of proverbs, using its own language. Tribes without schools use proverbs as a basic teaching tool for social mores. The English-speaking Caribbean is known for its colourful lifestyle, music, dance and speech. Equally colourful are its proverbs, many deriving from African tribal roots, others adapted from colonial masters, or Biblical teachings. Deborah Moore-Miggins has had a fascination with Caribbean proverbs since she was a child growing up in rural Tobago. Drawing from her family experiences and her wide circle of friends, she has put together an impressive collection of Caribbean proverbs, conveniently grouped in areas of ethical subject. Her nostalgic description of exciting island pastimes, such as, catching crabs, pulling seines on the beach and eating mangoes, are riveting. The scene she paints of villagers gathered on moonlit nights to exchange proverbs and folklore holds one spellbound. The result is a valuable work of scholarship, besides being an amusing and enlightening leisure-time read.

Book Description
This unique collection, The Transatlantic Culture Trade: Caribbean Creole Proverbs from Africa, Europe, and the Caribbean, celebrates indigenous Caribbean Creole languages and one of their associated cultural vectors, Creole proverbs. It is particularly timely as 2019 has been designated by the United Nations as the Year of Indigenous Languages, and falls within the United Nations Decade for People of African Descent which began in 2015 and will end in 2024. The 222 French-lexified and English-lexified Creole proverbs from the Caribbean, with corresponding phonetic transcriptions (IPA), is accessible to an international audience. As the homogenizing effects of globalization threaten the preservation of indigenous cultures of small nation states such as those in the Caribbean, this collection of proverbs counterbalances cultural erosion, and thereby safeguards the region's cultural heritage for future generations. Elements of intangible cultural heritage, Caribbean Creole proverbs depict the socio-historical heritage of the multilingual and multicultural region. This work is an invaluable resource for translators of Caribbean Creole culture, especially Creole proverbs, scholars of Caribbean Creole culture and anyone interested in comparative Caribbean Creole intangible cultural heritage.
