Tips for Working with Adults

Make it Worth it!

When tutoring an adult it is important to make the most of your time together. It is always helpful to chart progress and set goals. The following steps can help:

  • Review anticipated goals and set goals together

  • Have a plan for each session that addresses the goal

  • Identify the expectations of the session

  • Address any challenges in the plan

  • Recognize successes

  • Review and clarify activities

  • Determine if expectations have been met

  • Discuss activities for next session

  • Identify letter sounds giving the student difficulty.

  • Make lists of words the student knows that include the letter sounds that give the student difficulties.

  • Identify unfamiliar words and use a dictionary to determine meaning.

  • List names of characters and write their motivations.

  • Keep a journal of emotional response to action of a story.

  • Compare and contrast characters in a story by using a chart or Venn diagram.

  • List questions about the book.

  • Use maps to identify location of setting.

  • Read newspaper articles and discuss fact versus opinion in writing.

  • Identify uses of foreshadowing and flashbacks.
