Description of Lit Kit Levels

Pre-Emergent (purple) To be used with children who are not reading but may recognize some letters and familiar words.

Emergent (pink) To be used with children who recognize letters, some words and are able to determine what is happening in a story based upon illustrations.

Developing (yellow) To be used with children who are reading most sight words, spell and write some words, and are familiar with phonics. The children can also self-correct and will ask for help.

Functional (green) To be used with children who are comfortable with simple reading tasks, understand and recall details from a story, and can use predicting strategies.

Purposeful (blue) To be used with children who are reading, summarizing, and recalling details from a book. The children can also read chapter books and sound out unfamiliar and challenging words.
