Book Description
We hear about inadequate mental health care. We ask questions regarding a link between mental illness and violence. We do NOT hear as much about the stigma of mental illness that complicates one's ability to cope with a diagnosis that becomes a label, resulting in "self-stigma,"discouraging individuals from seeking and/or complying with treatment. Too often community members only "experience" mental illness through dramatic or dire media stories that fail to inform us about the real world of mental illness. Thus, stigma feeds, and is fed by, myths and misunderstandings leading to a community sense of hopelessness and fear of mental illness. In contrast, Geel, a stigma-free community in Belgium, has a centuries' old history of accepting those with mental illness - even as boarders in their own homes. Geel acknowledges the human needs of those with mental illness and responds to those needs by providing social opportunities and meaningful work, within the community While the U.S. does not have the same history as Geel, we do have programs that offer a fostering environment, offering hope for those with a diagnosis of mental illness as well as for the communities in which they live. In a language and style that can be understood by anyone and everyone, the author shares what she's learned and experienced regarding tolerance and inclusion - in Geel and in our own country - offering individuals and communities an opportunity to hear the encouraging "voices of hope for mental illness." When the general population is freed of myths and misunderstandings regarding mental illness, we can focus on mental health fostered by community care that thrives in "caring communities."

Book Description
From some of our most prominent spiritual and religious leaders, poets and thinkers, singers and writers, a book of wisdom to light our way in dark times. AN OPEN FIELD PUBLICATION FROM MARIA SHRIVER At the start of 2020, in what felt already like an age of disorder, our world faced one of the gravest global challenges in a century. Covid-19 raced around the earth, and chaos erupted. Yet in the midst of this crisis, billions of human beings responded with love. Across the globe, people sought to connect, whether in person from a socially distant six feet or via a screen from 10,000 miles away. In that moment, Tim Shriver saw an opportunity for those hungry for community to answer a call to heal, a call to hope, a call to unite. He asked monks and nuns, artists and activists, nurses and doctors, ex-presidents and ex-cons to come together to share messages of inspiration, transformation, and love. This book captures the spirit of that 24-hour event. Featuring stories and insights from Bishop TD Jakes, Elizabeth Gilbert, Van Jones, Amy Grant, Dr. Rheeda Walker, Pastor Rick Warren, Rev. Jacqui Lewis, Jewel, Deepak Chopra and many others, The Call to Unite offers readers a book of wisdom to turn to in hard times - filled with prayers, poems, spiritual insights and lessons to live by that will stand the test of time. Those seeking affirmation, solace, and inspiration need only look inside for guidance in finding the light in any crisis. Only in embracing each other can we amplify the love that creates our global community. Only in coming together can we be our happiest, and our best.

Book Description
"The stones are with us once again. Fresh on the heels of the enormously popular The Wisdom of Stones is the next volume in this inspirational series from former Rear Admiral/Assistant Surgeon General, psychologist, and award-winning photographer, Dr. Brian Flynn. Like its predecessor, Flynn's newest book, The Voices of Stones, is born out of his reflections while wandering the stony shores of Campobello Island in Canada's Bay of Fundy. It continues to explore the intersections of nature, human experience, and the teachings of time. In the mix of inspiring text and fine photography, Dr. Flynn again is able to communicate the powerful lessons learned in his many years as a trauma psychologist. His life's work has taken him to the locations of some of the country's most tragic events--events such as the shootings at Columbine High School, numerous hurricanes, floods, and fires, the bombings in Oklahoma City, and the attacks of 9/11. In the unique format of The Voices of Stone, Flynn shares with us the lessons learned from decades of being with individuals, families, and communities in their darkest hours. The stones give voice to his wisdom as they speak to all of us. The Voices of Stones is a unique and compelling journey. In its pages we follow an old man returning to walk stone beaches while we listen in on his dialogue with the stones that cover those beaches. These are not frivolous conversations. The old man asks the stones to speak to him about the pain of loss and the search for hope. In this dialogue the old man finds hope and gains new perspective on the world and his place in it. This book will resonate with those who face loss of all types. They will be reminded that they are not alone and that recovery and hope is possible. "
