The author notes the New Testament Greek word used by Saint Pail to describe coalitions for good is a derivative of the Greek root "koinonia," i.e., "fellowship." The author urges that partnerships are anthropomorphic extensions of the eternal triune Godhead. The author contends for three categories of partnerships: denominational partnerships, evangelical partnerships, and common grace partnerships. Each type of coalition is described. The third of the classes, "common grace," is compared to the late Francis Schaeffer’s "Co-belligerents." The monograph closes with the principle operating commitment of the prospective parties of a partnership: "cooperation without compromise." The author cited a historical example of common grace partnerships in the ministry of the Right Reverend Dr. Benjamin Morgan Palmer (1818-1902), pastor of First Presbyterian Church of New Orleans. The growth of Christianity in the global South and the fall of colonialism in the middle of the twentieth century caused a crisis in Christian mission, as many southern Christians spoke out about indignities they had suffered and many northern Christians retreated from the global South. American Christians soon began looking for a fresh start, a path forward that was neither isolationist nor domineering. Out of this dream the ''sister church'' model of mission was born. Rather than western churches sending representatives into the ''mission field,'' they established congregation-to-congregation partnerships with churches in the global South. Janel Kragt Bakker draws on extensive fieldwork and interviews with participants in these partnerships to explore the sister church movement and in particular its effects on American churches. Because Christianity is numerically and in many ways spiritually stronger in the global South than it is in the global North--while the imbalance in material resources runs in the opposite direction--both northern and southern Christians stand to gain. Challenging prevailing notions of friction between northern and southern Christians, Bakker argues that sister church relationships are marked by interconnectivity and collaboration.

This book calls for a major paradigm shift in the church's thinking and practice if the church is to engage with the upcoming generations of the third decade of this fast-changing twenty-first century. Just as the church has had to adapt to a changing context in the past, it now needs to engage seriously with this post-enlightenment, post-human, techno-centric age of artificial intelligence. However, the church also needs to recall its counter-cultural, prophetic role, following Elijah, Jeremiah, Amos, Jesus, and Paul, challenging society as it faces complex dilemmas raised by technology-driven development in these unprecedented times. The church will have to acknowledge unaddressed weaknesses in the past: of identifying with established power rather than vulnerability and the marginalized; of depending on a hierarchical, ministerial order at the expense of the ministry of every believer; of acquiescing to materialist, anthropocentric, and consumerist growth as an undisputable norm. This book develops the vision of a church engaged in the mission of God: of welcoming technological development but with an eye on kingdom values; of promoting innovation, so long as it does not result in a growth of inequality, or at the expense of the environment; of pointing towards a humanity that deepens its relationships with its Creator, its fellow humans, and its environment. The author calls on grassroots believers to reflect and act, within their local communities, as inspired and empowered daughters and sons of God, in the knowledge that following Jesus Christ provides a radical new paradigm for living, learning and leading, in and through these times of epochal change.
