Book Description
It is difficult to overestimate the singularity of Rudolf Bultmann. Bultmann's Theology of the New Testament changed the course of New Testament interpretation and has continued to influence the field until today. As ambitious in scope as it is consistent in method, Bultmann's volume asks and provides answers to the big questions. Bultmann also found a way to wed a sober-minded commitment to historical reconstruction to his deep desire for the New Testament to speak to contemporary humans.

Book Description
A classic kind of introduction to the New Testament, Schnelle's book presents full and up-to-date information about the individual writings with respect to date, author, place of writing, structure of the document, current scholarship, and themes and theological aims. The book, intended to supersede W. G. Kummel's introduction, informs the reader of all the important historical issues and describes the range of scholarly opinion and literature, preparing the reader to pass judgment. After providing an overview of the development of the New Testament canon, Schnelle then takes up, in turn, the letters of Paul, the Synoptic Gospels (including Q), Acts, the Deutero-Paulines, the Catholic letters, the Gospel of John, and Revelation. With extensive anglicized bibliographies.

Book Description
This work is not a history of New Testament times, nor an account of New Testament religion. Nor does it proceed from a view that the New Testament was written as theology. We must bear in mind that the writers of the New Testament books were not writing set theological pieces. They were concerned with the needs of the churches for which they wrote. Those churches already had the Old Testament, but these new writings became in time the most significant part of the Scriptures of the believing community. As such, they should be studied in their own right, and these questions should be asked: What do these writings mean? What is the theology they express or imply? What is of permanent validity in them? We read these writings across a barrier of many centuries and from a standpoint of a very different culture. We make every effort to allow for this, but we never succeed perfectly. In this book I am trying hard to find out what the New Testament authors meant, and this not as an academic exercise, but as the necessary prelude to our understanding of what their writings mean for us today. -- From the Introduction

Book Description
`To present, in less than 400 pages (excluding the indexes), the whole sweep of New Testament thought is an excessively formidable task, calling not only for scholarship and learning but also for an artist's sense of proportion and economy of stroke. There are few who could have succeeded so well as Dr Richardson' (Journal of Theological Studies). `This book will stand for a long time as the indispensable handbook for the theological student who wants both to see the general picture of the apostolic Church's faith, and also to have a convenient and reliable digest of what the New Testament says about particular topics, such as, for example, Christology or salvation' (Church Times). `Alan Richardson is a theologian "whose praise in the gospel is (or deserves to be) in all the churches" on account both of the books which he has written himself and of those which he has edited. His latest work, An Introduction to the Theology of the New Testament, will probably be found more serviceable by students and teachers than anything he has previously produced' (Theology). Alan Richardson, who died in 1975, was for many years Professor of Christian Theology at Nottingham University and subsequently Dean of York.
