Book Description
Soon after the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit came upon his disciples and strengthened them to be the bold witnesses of Jesus. They were no longer afraid of worldly powers because they have received the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. They could even have the courage to die for Christ. We know from the history that, most of them are brutally killed during the days of persecution. During the time of apostles all the Christian believers were gathered together for prayer and worship in the secret rooms, as a result, they all experienced the presence and the fruit of Holy Spirit in their lives.Soon after the second Vatican council, a new movement emerged in the Catholic community that was charismatic renewal movement. In order to have a clear understanding about charismatic movement the topic of my choice was "Catholic charismatic renewal movement; its influence in the Christian spiritual life." The entire work is divided in to three chapters and the discussion begins with the narration about the historical evolution of the charismatic movement, its origin, initial phase and blooming phase. Subsequently it sees the cause of its spreading in to all over the world. Then we try to know about nine charisms its relevance and its aim according to the teachings of St. Paul the apostle. Then will try to understand the Pauline teachings of these charisms. Similarly, the contributions of second Vatican council and the views and opinions of different popes about the charismatic movement are also investigated. Then we shall see the different dimensions of charismatic movement like, ecclesial, baptism of Spirit, ecumenical and eschatological. Finally, we make a critical appraisal. It includes the evaluation of the positives- a special devotion to the Holy Spirit, emergence of prayer groups, Marian devotions, sense of missionary zeal and the increasing number of vocations to priesthood and the religious life- and the negatives- religious fundamentalism, over emphasis on eschatology and over emphasis on sin and the guilt- of charismatic movement in the passage of times.
