Reassessment of the Marine Salvage Posture of the United States
Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309051495
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 144
Book Description
Prompt and effective response to time-critical ship casualties and emergencies, for example, by refloating stranded ships, can prevent marine pollution and economic disruption of ports and waterways. The marine salvage industry, which conducts this work, has undergone significant changes in the past two decades. This book evaluates these changes and assesses the adequacy of marine salvage in the United States. Among the issues addressed are conditions in the salvage industry; emergency response-time; national salvage policy; workforce needs; salvage techniques; and the contribution of the Navy to the national salvage capability.

Food Salvage Industry Should be Prevented from Selling Unfit and Misbranded Food to the Public
Author: United States. General Accounting Office
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Food
Languages : en
Pages : 54
Book Description
In May of 1975, GAO issued a report concerning potentially unwholesome and unsafe food sold by food salvage operations in predominantly poor neighborhoods nationwide. GAO recommended several ways that federal agencies responsible for the safety of foods sold to the public could better control and monitor food operations. Because of the severity and magnitude of the problems discussed in the 1975 report, a followup survey was conducted to determine whether the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) had progressed in regulating the food salvage industry. No improvement has been seen in the deplorable conditions or the questionable quality of products sold in salvage operations. A majority of the operations visited bought and sold food that was vermin infested or in rusted, leaking, severely dented, swollen, or filth encrusted containers. In many cases, the food products were in containers with missing, misleading, or incomplete labels thereby presenting a threat to people on special diets for such reasons as illness or allergies. In addition, FDA has not developed federal regulations establishing a nationally uniform code for salvage operations and has not established an effective regulatory program to prevent the sale of misbranded and potentially adulterated or potentially unsafe salvaged food to the public and institutions.

Junkyards, Gearheads, and Rust
Author: David N. Lucsko
Publisher: JHU Press
ISBN: 1421419432
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 279
Book Description
The material appeal of the automobile junkyard goes beyond the search for second-hand parts. What happens to automobiles after they are retired but before they are processed as scrap? In this fascinating history, David N. Lucsko takes readers on a tour of salvage yards and wrecked or otherwise out-of-service cars in the United States from the point of view of gearheads—the hot rodders, restoration hobbyists, street rodders, and classic car devotees who reuse, repurpose, and restore junked cars. Junkyards, Gearheads, and Rust is a nuanced exploration of the business of dismantling wrecks and selling second-hand parts. It examines the reinterpretation of these cars and parts by artists as well as their restoration by enthusiasts. It also surveys the origin and evolution of gearhead-oriented yards that specialize in specific types of automobiles; dissects the material and emotional appeal of the salvage yard and its contents among enthusiasts; and examines how zoning and nuisance ordinances have affected both salvage businesses and hobbyists. Lucsko concludes with an analysis of efforts during the last twenty-five years to hasten vehicular obsolescence at the expense of salvage yards, mechanics, and enthusiasts. By examining how cars are salvaged, repurposed, and restored, this book demonstrates that the history of the automobile is much more than a running catalog of showroom novelties.
