In the following pages I have aimed, not so much at a study of nineteenth-century life and progress, as to give a setting to some of the more striking elements of contrast which have been brought into such bold relief. The Peasants' Rising after Waterloo has, however, a character of its own, and, as one of the most curious little tragi comedies in all our history, may perhaps deserve the prominence given to it.
