Excerpt from The Presbyterian Historical Almanac, and Annual Remembrancer of the Church, for 1860, Vol. 2 In common with other members of the Presbyterian Church, I feel, that to be fully conversant with her onward progress, I must know how each branch Of the family have carried on the various institutions of religion; how they have fulfilled their duties to God and man, and what success has crowned their efforts. The experience and observation of the past year has prompted me, whilst preserving the plan of the Almanac, to enlarge its basis, so that I might include various Statistics, Historical Sketches, and Tables, which, though not coming within the range of the year, pos sess a definite value, by enabling the reader to be fully advised con cerning the past history of the subjects to which they refer. Statistics should be reliable, suggestive, and instructive; with these three elements of value, they form the most direct and conclusive means of imparting information. Spread abroad as the Presbyterian Church is over the whole world - divided into numerous bodies - it has been difficult even for the most enterprising and zealous of her members to keep fully aware of her progress and her power. Differing as they do from each other, still the golden vein of Calvinism pervades each organization; and though distinct as the billows, they are one as the sea. Believing that a volume such as is now presented to the pub lic would prove useful - founded as it is upon the most reliable data, all our statements being derived from official sources, I have prepared the plan and carried it out to the best of my ability. That such a work was needed has been a prevalent idea in the minds of many, as an extensive and wide-spread cor respondence has fully revealed. The generous co-operation of numerous friends aided me in obtaining the documents and facts needed to complete my design and though to enumerate all who have thus placed me under obligation, would extend this Preface beyond a reasonable limit, I must be allowed the privilege of placing upon record the names of Rev.
