This volume is about the most mind-boggling sacrament of the Christian faith, also referred to as the Sacrament of the Altar, the Eucharist: in its Roman Catholic interpretation, the conversion of the substance of the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ for Holy Communion. The challenge of providing a rational interpretation of this doctrine of faith proved to be one of the most contentious issues in the Western history of ideas, apparently going against self-evident metaphysical principles (requiring accidents existing without a substance, and a body in several places at the same time, etc.), and dividing schools of thought, indeed, eventually, warring religious factions. The volume addresses both the metaphysical, theoretical issues involved in this challenge and the historical, theological developments of how meeting this challenge played out first in the schools and even later in religious schisms, leading to the paradigmatic shift from medieval to modern forms of thought. The essays of the volume derive from the lectures of an eponymous international conference held in Budapest, Hungary, which was also the occasion of founding the Society for the History of European Ideas (SEHI); accordingly, the book is the first volume of the annual Proceedings of the SEHI. In this insightful, interdisciplinary study, Robert Sokolowski uses the methods of phenomenology to examine Christian religious beliefs, particularly the sacrament of the Eucharist. In so doing, he comes to terms with many theological and cultural issues raised by modernity. Although the Eucharist is the center of focus, other issues in Christian faith are also examined, such as the Christian understanding of God, Creation, the Incarnation, Redemption, and biblical Revelation. Sokolowski employs a method that he calls "the theology of disclosure," which studies the structures of appearance and should be distinguished from both positive and scholastic theology. He takes appearances as objective disclosures, not as mere psychological events. When discussing the Eucharist, he shows how it uses the form of quotation and how it draws on various temporal dimensions of human existence as it reenacts the sacrifice of Christ before the eternal Father. The author also considers how Christian belief differs from other forms of religion and from modern atheism. By demonstrating how the Christian understanding of God differs from other ways of understanding the divine, he attempts to show that Christianity is not simply one religion among many but the truth of religion. These deeper themes are explored as necessary contexts for the Eucharist, which could not be properly understood except against the background of the Christian understanding of God as eternal and as Creator and Redeemer. This book demands a 'new look' at Eucharistic doctrine, and is offered as a serious contribution to ecumenical discussion. Two motives lie behind this study--(1) the fact that the explanation of the Dominical worlds either causes offense to educated people, or is so watered down that the explanation ceases to arise naturally from the language; and (2) the tragedy of a situation where the one sacrament which should unite us all is one of the major causes of our divisions. The thesis is concerned to establish that in the field of the New Testament itself there is good ground for believing that there is a single Eucharistic doctrine. It proceeds on the lines following: (1) The Last Supper was a Passover, albeit an unorthodox one, and the Passover background was an eminently suitable instrument for our Lord's purposes. (2) It concludes that the Pauline-Lukan tradition of the cup saying is original, and then considers the meaning of the Dominical language with reference both to the Greek and to the possible Aramaic originals. What is yielded by this examination is a doctrine which is in line with the historical background, intelligible, spirituality satisfying, and, most important, free of the metaphysical subtlety which has divided the Church. (3) Examination of the Corinthian Eucharist and the Breaking of the Bread in Acts discloses an attempt to reproduce the Last Supper, and therefore an identical doctrine. (4) A study of the Fourth Gospel inquires how far its supposedly 'realist' doctrine conflicts with this identical doctrine, and reasons are given which suggest that any difference in doctrine between the Synoptists and the Fourth Gospel is unlikely. (5) The two concluding sections of the book examine the doctrinal implications of the thesis established, with special reference to the doctrine of the Presence and the doctrine of the Eucharistic sacrifice. Because the Reformers claimed to reestablish a Scriptural doctrine, reference is made to the work of Cranmer, its weakness illustrating the strength of the case for the exegesis herein propounded. (6) In the 'sealing ordinances' of the Church of Scotland and in the Covenant Service of the Methodists the author sees genuine insights which belongs to a true Eucharistic doctrine and which should be preserved.

In the light of its own history, the Catholic theology of the Eucharist, as it is generally understood today, is revealed as a splinter tradition whose deficiencies call for fundamental reformulation. The valid aspects of that theology (for example, the recovery of the role of the Holy Spirit in the new Roman Eucharistic Prayers) must be identified and integrated with the faith and practice of the first theological millennium when the lex orandi was not so dominated by the lex credendi. In the third theological millennium, more attention to the content and structure of the classical Eucharistic Prayers of both East and West will result in a Catholic systematic theology of eucharistic sacrifice that is not only truer to its biblical and patristic foundations but also - of ecumenical import - closer to some of the theological insights of the Protestant Reformers. These highlights of The Eucharist in the West illustrate the great value of this posthumous work. Conceptually complete, but in only rough draft form at the time of Father Kilmartin's death, it has been edited and prepared for publication by Robert J. Daly, SJ Chapter one describes the characteristics of the eucharistic theology of the Western Latin Fathers. Chapter two identifies the more important orientations and developments of the Catholic tradition from early medieval Scholasticism up to the first part of the twelfth century. Chapter three singles out the special contribution of early Scholasticism to Latin eucharistic theology. Chapter four functions as a bridge from early Scholasticism to high Scholasticism by outlining the general approach to a synthetic theology of the Eucharist which was obtained at the beginning of the thirteenth century. Chapter five treats eucharistic theology from high Scholasticism to the Council of Trent. Chapter six summarizes the dogmatic teaching of the Council of Trent. Chapter ten offers an account of some recent contributions to the formulation of a theology of the eucharistic sacrifice which have contributed to the modern average Roman Catholic synthesis. Robert J. Daly, SJ, is a professor of theology at Boston College and former editor of Theological Studies. Edward J. Kilmartin, SJ (1923-1994), professor for liturgical theology at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome, taught theology first at the Weston Jesuit School of Theology and later at Boston College.
