One of the most striking features of life in the Catholic Church today is the ever-widening gap between its official teaching on marriage and sexual morality and the practice of most of its lay members. The book seeks to bridge this gap in two ways: It considers some of the tacit assumptions about marriage and sexual morality in today's society, since these affect Catholics as much as everybody else. It also considers the Church's teaching in some of these areas and explores new ways of putting it across so that it can make sense to ordinary lay Catholics. In doing so the author draws on contemporary writing as well as bringing her own reflections and experience of living the Church's teaching to bear on the subject. The book is aimed at married couples, those considering marriage as well as clergy and those involved in marriage preparation and counselling. Anita Dowsing was born in Copenhagen in 1944. She was brought up as a member of Denmark's tiny Catholic community, but has spent most of her adult life in the United Kingdom. She has an M.A. in English Language and Literature from Copenhagen University, and a Ph.D. in Old English from the University of Wales. Anita Dowsing has spent most of her working life in Adult Religious Education in the Diocese of East Anglia as Co-ordinator of the Norwich Deanery Team, a member of the Diocesan Religious Education Commission and, currently, the Diocesan Marriage and Family Life Commission. She was a member of the East Anglia Steering Group for the Bishops' Conference of England and Wales 'Listening 2004' project (listening to family experience in every diocese), and was one of the facilitators at the Bishops Conference Working Group which produced resource material on marriage and family life for parish use. She is married with an adult daughter.

Conjugal Chastity in Pope Wojtyla explains how Karol Wojtyla, philosopher, theologian, and Pope, tried to show how the sexual act, within the context of marriage, is an expression of love. After explaining how love as goodwill is the foundation of conjugal love, the correct relationship between love and justice is clarified. The negative dimension of the personalistic norm of Wojtyla is then critically examined. Conjugal love is explained in terms of conjugal beneficience based on conjugal benevolence. This love leads to total self-giving in each conjugal act. The long-standing tradition of baptizing infants suggests that the sacraments plunge our bodies into salvation, so the revelation of God's love in the sacraments addresses the whole person, not the mind alone. In this work, the contemporary Roman Catholic rite of baptism for infants becomes a case study, manifesting the connections between the human body, the ecclesial body, and the Body of Christ. The sacramental life, for children as for adults, is an ongoing journey deeper into the life of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. By examining the church's practice of infant baptism, Kimberly Hope Belcher asks how human beings participate in God's life through the sacraments. Christian sacraments are embodied, cultural rituals performed by and for human beings. At the same time, the sacraments are God's gifts of grace, by which human beings enter into God's own life. In this study, contemporary ritual studies, sacramental theology, and trinitarian theology are used to explore how participation in the sacraments can be an efficacious engagement in God's life of love. This work explores some of the most interesting and vexing problems in contemporary life. The foundation of Kaczor's approach is happiness. We all want to be happy. Every day, in whatever we do, we seek this goal. But what exactly is happiness? And how can we find it? The saints and psychologists agree: there can be no real happiness without authentic love-erotic love, friendship love, and self-giving love (agape). From this foundation of happiness Kaczor explores the nature of marriage, and the love they promise to each other, which is agape, a selfgiving love that is the choice to do good for the other. He also examines alternatives to covenant marriage, such as polygamy and samesex marriage, as well as cohabitation. Finally the book explores the value of children. To make sense of Catholic teaching on contraception, he says that we must first reconsider the value of fertility and having children. Only in this perspective, can one begin to understand what the Church teaches.
