Our cri tics are various some are carpers pure and simple, - from the omniscient skipper up to Canon Taylor, without a bit of heart intent only on mischief; some are sympathetic like Mr. Cains - to whom I lift my hat - but insufficiently acquainted with mission work; some sit in the easy arm-chair of speculative philosophy high up in the third heavens - complacently discoursing about matters of which they know about as much as they do of the economy of the planet Mars. Book Description
Excerpt from The Chinese Recorder and Missionary Journal, Vol. 39: January, 1908 Just here it is well to notice that although missionary colleges have not as yet received any official recognition from the government, yet among those selected for the privilege of going abroad to study, many were graduates of missionary colleges and several were Christians. Altogether there are now 217 Chinese students in the United States, of whom 122 are in universities or technical schools. There are also an increasing number in England, Germany, and Belgium. The tide seems to have turned against sending young men to study in Japan. The Chinese government has become alarmed by the fact that many of those who have spent a short time in Tokyo have come back to China and disseminated the most revolutionary political doctrines. Although a large number of those successful at the recent examination in Peking were educated in Japan, nevertheless there has been a distinct decline in the enthusiasm formerly felt for what seemed to be a short road to enlightenment, name ly, a few months' study in Japan. A change from the common text once made in an important passage, it would not be easily, or without friction, that it could be altered back if new evidence seemed to call for a fresh change. Book Description
Excerpt from The Chinese Recorder and Missionary Journal, Vol. 29 I suppose there is no subject that engages the anxious thought of the missionary of more importance than the one that we are to discuss to-night. A good working knowledge of the Chinese language, especially of the spoken language, is fundamental to the successful prosecution of the missionary enterprise in this country. We can make no progress without it. Upon the proper use of the language depends in a large measure the success or failure of the missionary. The voice is our great instrument for propagating the Gospel. There is no power equal to this in the whole range of human agency - the living voice appealing directly to the ear of the listener - and the use of the language, of words, phrases, idioms, makes or unmakes the impression that the hearers receive, when we speak to them in their own tongue of the wonderful works of God. And, alas! No miraculous gift of tongues is vouchsafed to us, as was bestowed upon the first missionaries of the cross. We are com pelted to dig and delve and go through the long weary process of learning the strange sounds and accumulating words and phrases and vocabulary. No doubt many of us have often longed for the gift of tongues, so that we might proceed at once on our arrival in the country to do the great work that We have come here to do. And indeed from a. Superficial view of the case one might think that such a. Gift would be a. Great saving of time and strength. But a closer study of the real nature of our work, must convince us that it is well for us that we are obliged to take some time to acquire the language. There are many things for the missionary to learn, besides the language, before he can do successful work, and the time spent in the acquisition of the language is none too long for him to acquire that knowledge of the people and of the best methods of bringing the Gospel to them that is so essential to effective service. Book Description
Excerpt from The Chinese Recorder and Missionary Journal, Vol. 13 This does not mean the first and absolute creation of light. It refers to the introduction of solar and sidereal light upon our earth. The creation of the heavenly bodies and consequently of light, is included in the statement of the first verse that God created the heavens and the earth. But neither sun, nor star-light had as yet reached the earth. Utter darkness brooded over it. It was as black as though neither sun nor star existed. The thick vapours that enveloped it shut out every ray of light and wrapped it in primeval darkness. One who has seen or rather felt a London fog knows how completely a thick vapour can shut out the brightest sunshine. Indeed an ordinary dull day sufficiently shows the obscuring effect of a little vapour. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
