Book Description
This book evaluates the consequences of economic, social, environmental and cultural change on people living and working within Teesside in the North-East of England. It assesses the lived experiences, working lives, health and cultural perspectives of residents and key stakeholders in the wake of serious de-industralisation in the region. The narrative is embedded within the long-term industrial history of Stockton: an area once dominated by steel, coal and chemical industries. This past still continues to shape its future and influences the ways in which that future is conceived and envisioned. The author explores a ‘biography of place’ analytical framework to offer a holistic view of the area, which considers the interaction between the social, economic, cultural, visual and environmental legacy of the community, which is firmly grounded in the past, present and future prospects of those who live and work there.

Book Description
The story of Middlesbrough as a town is one that dates back less than two centuries, with the emergence of the modern urban centre the product of Victorian industrialisation and rapid urban expansion. Despite this relatively short history, the fascination and pride in Middlesbrough’s heritage is as strong as that found in established historical towns, evokes poignant memories and prompts lively debates. Memories of Middlesbrough in the 1970s and 1980s includes over 100 historic photographs of many of the town’s familiar landmarks and provides an insight into a period that brought unprecedented change. Inspired by the photographs of John Severs, Teesside Archives and other private and public collections, the book charts demolition of historic buildings, the disappearance of many industries, regeneration, sporting glories and shares the memories of the people of Middlesbrough.

Book Description
Two hundred years of industry have transformed the British landscape. This book enables the reader to reconstruct the landscape of past industry. The authors are industrial archaeologists of national standing whose concern is to use surviving material evidence and contemporary sources to study the former working conditions of men and women. Comprehensive in coverage, the book examines fuels, metals, clothing, food, building and transport. It makes clear the tangible elements which form the basis for recreation of past landscapes and demonstrates both their function and the context in which they should be considered.

Book Description
The Committee decided to take evidence on the steel industry after Corus's and parent company Tata's decision to mothball Teesside Cast Products at Redcar and Lackenby. Evidence outlined the serious economic devastation that would occur if the TCP plant were mothballed. The number of those made unemployed as a consequence will climb above 4,000. The Committee states that the central priority must be to find a way to return the plant to operation as soon as possible and to maintain the jobs of a highly skilled workforce until what may well be a temporary downturn has been worked through. The short-sighted decision by Corus to close the rolling mill at Redcar and Lackenby has left it unable to response flexibly to changes in the world steel market in a way that would guarantee continued production on Teesside as indeed they were warned it would. The proposal of possibly rolling slab produced at Teesside at the mill in Llanwern, South Wales has been put forward and the Committee urges the Government to continue to work with Tata and Corus and the union on both sites to explore fully the potential of this idea

Book Description
As a product of its time, the call centre utilises new developments in telecommunications and information technology to offer cost-efficient delivery systems for customer care. Efficiency, productivity and flexibility are all embodiments of neoliberal market capitalism and are all personified in the call centre operation, as well as the structure of the labour market in general. Thus the individual and the workplace are embedded in a variety of global processes. In order to frame the context in which call centre operations exist today and their employees (mainly young men and women) negotiate the increasingly risky and individualised task of developing an identity or sense of belonging in the world, Labour Markets and Identity on the Post-Industrial Assembly Line sets out the economic, social and political changes over the last three decades that have restructured the labour market, altered the balance between labour, management and the state, and unleashed global market capitalism upon previously sheltered areas of the economy and social life in both Britain and elsewhere. This ground-breaking book offers one of the first real qualitative sociological investigations of a relatively new form of employment, to see what life is like on the 'post-industrial assembly line', whilst also taking a close look at the nature of class, identity and subjectivity in relation to young people coming of age in a world dramatically altered over the last three decades.
